First 5 mega projects to be expedited next year

BANGKOK, 12 November 2015 (NNT) - The procurement of public-private partnership (PPP) projects has reportedly made significant progress, with five of them expected to begin in the second half of next year.

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, who also chairs a PPP policy committee, said the committee has chosen to streamline the first five mega projects under the PPP fast-track scheme.

The government is expected to form partnerships with private companies by the first half of 2016, before they can begin to invest.

The first five projects, which are worth a combined 334 billion baht, consist of pink, yellow and blue sky train lines, as well as two motorway extensions connecting Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima and Kanchanaburi provinces.

The terms and conditions for the five PPP projects are scheduled to be completed for the PPP policy committee’s consideration in December. Mr. Somkid said the procurement can start no later than May next year.

Somkid said "The committee has chosen to streamline the first five mega projects under the PPP fast-track scheme"! Which can be loosely translated as, "we’ve already spoken with our well-heeled buddies about the financial benefits to all of us".

How do these 5 mega projects stimulate the economy? How do they encourange foreign investment? How do they encourage foreign countries to buy Thai products(exports)? How do they encourage more tourists to visit Thailand?

They dont, they are all non essential, non productive projects that will not benefit the economy.

The pink line will run at the end of my soi. Preparations for it have already begun. It will improve the life of hundreds of thousands of people in this area by encouraging the use of public transport and making other parts of Bangkok more accessible for work. The idea that it will not generate income is absurd. And what is so wrong with concentrating on Bangkok where 40% of GDP is generated. You would hardly expect a skytrain to be put into Nakhorn Nowhere. Other good news is that the value of my properties will increase as will their rental value. No one can build higher in the immediate vicinity and there is ample parking in the older properties. Win win! Eat your heart out all those people who reject Bangkok as a place to live and work (actually because most of them can only afford a studio in Udon or some such backwater). Invest in Bangkok and encourage more people to leave the countryside to work in its sururban manufacturing industries.

Totally agree that it will generate income. However, around 75% of all Government spending is concentrated on Bangkok already, and one day soon (30 years? 50 years? 100 years?) it will all be under water.

Bangkok will be more pleasant as it slips under the water. It will then be the true Venice of the East without the vileness of motorized road transport. The city with it's wealth will find a way to survive the change in climate and redouble its attractiveness. The gloom merchants always predict the demise of cities while in reality it is the countryside that is perpetually doomed.

you are so funny. Bangkok 40%??? try something more like 18-19%. and just to let you know Rayong and the Eastern Seaboard is higher than BKK up around 24%
