ricklev Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I'm thinking about buying a new low end laptop. Hopefully under 10,000 baht. All I really use it for is to watch downloaded videos from a portable drive via an HDMI connection to my TV. I also use it for iTunes and might very rarely do some word processing using MS Office. Hard drive size doesn't matter. Pre-installed with Windows 10 would be best. Small and light is fine. I don't really care about the laptop display size of quality. Thanks, for any suggestions!
GinBoy2 Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 (edited) ฿10K ain't going to buy you very much, certainly nothing new. In addition here in Thailand forget about it being preloaded with an operating system, a genuine one at least, so add that cost to your budget Edited November 18, 2015 by GinBoy2
ukrules Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 You'll have no problems getting a low end laptop here, you won't get much for 10,000 Baht though. They seem to specialise in the cheap and nasty end of the scale in most of the retailers in Thailand. The problems arise when you're looking for a powerful high end laptop because hardly anywhere sells anything above the most basic models.
Cloggie Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I recently saw second hand laptops at Tesco Lotus in Pattaya - maybe buy second hand? Look at buy - sell groups at Facebook.
Chicog Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Unbranded refurb 10" Tablet: $70 MicroUSB keyboard: $10 ChromeCast $35 Net outlay: $115 = About Bt4200.Will run Windows 10 (I have one). Runs Kodi + Stalker too. Also has one of those Mini (or is it Micro?) HDMI slots in case you want to go the wired route.
ricklev Posted November 18, 2015 Author Posted November 18, 2015 Thanks. Did you have that tablet shipped to thailand?
phazey Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I've bought two Thinkpads that have been reconditioned (Office/Corporate end of life) - i5/4GB's really good condition for about 7000 baht a pop from a guy on ebay - "newandusedlaptops4u" is his ebay id. I put an SSD in each and installed Windows 10 - brilliant devices for the family.
Pib Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Don't know what area of Thailand you are in, but here in Bangkok stores like ITCity, BananaIT, PowerBuy, CSC, etc., quite a few low end laptops in the Bt10K ballpark...say around Bt9K if on sale and up to around Bt12K if normal price. Mostly 14 inch displays but a few with 15.6 inch display. Normally they are running low end mobile Pentium or Celeron CPU with 2GB RAM (just a few may have 4GB) and 500GB hard drive...and some even have a DVD drive. They come with a 1yr warranty. But these low cost mobile Pentium/Celeron CPU laptops while using low power to extend battery life and reduce CPU heating give up CPU horsepower to get the low power/low heating. But (another but) for basic computering they get the job done.
lostinisaan Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 good luck getting even a tablet for that He might get a Kee Nok Tablet for it. Plus a free decoder. Why wouldn't you put a few K's on it and buy a nice Dell???
lostinisaan Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I recently saw second hand laptops at Tesco Lotus in Pattaya - maybe buy second hand? Look at buy - sell groups at Facebook. And I was sure tat there are only second-hand farang wifes...you never stop learning....
MilesofSmiles Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Yea 10,000 is really quite low, especially once you pay for a new windows 10 install/license. You'd probably be better off getting a second hand laptop that's got better specs and build quality than anything you get new for 10k. Spending another 5000 will get you a much better class of laptop. Craigslist has some decent stuff for sale at low prices. eg http://bangkok.craigslist.co.th/sys/5291842645.html http://bangkok.craigslist.co.th/sys/5265425294.html
Burl Ives Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 I bought a Lenovo Q190, with Intel i3 processor, 4Gb ram and 500Gb HDD, plugged into TV, as HTPC. All you need extra is wireless keyboard and mouse. Perfect solution, got mine from Lazada: http://www.lazada.co.th/lenovo-computer-pc-ideacentre-q190-57331710-i3-3217u-180ghz4gb500gbintel-hddosbr-1353511.html Cost for all just over 10,000THB
ricklev Posted November 20, 2015 Author Posted November 20, 2015 Thanks. That Lenovo Q190 would do exactly what I need. Laptop might be slightly more useful but not that big a deal. No legal OS sucks. I wonder how Lenovo saves there.
Pib Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 PC coming without a major OS installed such as Windows is very common now days...lowers the cost of the computer....the majority of computers sold in Thailand and many other countries will come without Windows installed because people may not want to install Windows on the computer...maybe Linux instead...or they already have a legal copy of Windows...or they know they can easily get Windows loaded at a local Thai computer shop for a few hundred baht. But in other countries like the U.S. it's reversed and the majority of new computers come with Windows installed...but make no bones about it you pay extra for the computer that way.
