Red today in the News that those so-call 'vetting' agencies cannot even ask the religion of those 'refugees'.

The agency vetting refugees for admission to the US, most certainly can ask what religion someone is. Prior to that it would be the UNHCR.

Religion is one of the 5 possible reasons for persecution. Determining if someone is being persecuted because they are a member of a specifically targeted group cannot be accomplished without asking very probing, and sometimes personal questions. If you can't ask the questions, you cannot determine that a person is actually a genuine refugee.
