Blood donations urged as dengue cases TRIPLE in Thailand
By Coconuts Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- People have been urged to donate blood as the number of dengue fever cases in Thailand have tripled in the last year.

The Thai Red Cross Society says there were 111,826 cases this year of the mosquito-borne disease - a 207 percent increase on last year's cases, reported Bangkok Post.

They are appealing for blood donations as stock at their blood centre has been dented by the high number of cases.

Dengue is the world's fastest-spreading tropical disease, according to the World Health Organization. It says about 50 million cases of dengue fever occur each year.

Gave my portion yesterday and I can only recommend everybody to do it.

Unless you are outside age range or have a condition that prevents you from giving blood there is no excuse not to do it (and scared of needles is not an excuse).

Ive had dengue twice. First time made second time feel like joy.

Thailand never sprays. Ridiculous, Malaysia and Singapore spray.

First time, casme out of remote Cambodia. Second time Pattaya.

It's absolutely rife in the cities here in Thailand. Mosquitoes breed in the sewers and standing water. Govt could obviously not care less.

A famous Thai male soap star is currently very sick in ICU with it ,which has most Thai aware of Dengue.I have noticed lately a lot more of those tiny black dot day time mossies in my garden ,and some get into the house .I am in Chiang Mai ,and those day time mossies are the carriers of Dongue.

My friend, who is never sick, contracted it last year. He was seriously ill and nearly died. Another person I know died very suddenly despite being under intensive care.

Since then I have heard of about 10 acquaintances who have had dengue fever. One girl has had it 3 times.

Let's hope they find a vaccine quickly.

On a little off topic note: The next big threat seems to come from super bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. I saw figures of up to 8 million deaths in Asia the next 50 years.

Where can I donate in Korat? Any suggestions? I've never donated blood bedofe, but I'd be happy to if I thought it might help others.

I do not know where in Thailand you are, but in my area, they spray often.

In fact, I worry that they are rather careless with their application

( I was a licenced applicator in California and do know a thing or two about this )

I do agree that control is needed.

Mosquitos kill more humans than any other animal on the planet.

I also know that careless application of pesticides can cause both short and long term illness and even death in humans.

Tropical countries like Thailand neeed safe and comprehensive mosquito control programs....NOW!

The cost of collecting, processing, storing and delivering the blood has to be covered.

Would you care to suggest how these costs can be met without levying a charge on the user ?

The PDF contains the costs associated with supplying blood/blood products in the UK where there can be no cynical comment as no one makes a "profit " .The NHS is fully funded by taxation.

is there anything you can soak or wash your shirts in that will keep these mozzies away ? even a lttle bit ?

they seem to love me :(

here in California we have West Nile virus and at least around here not too many mosquitos,

But it only takes ONE infected bite !

I recently heard about an English girl who died from dengue in Bangkok. Very sad and becoming more concerning.

Very sad, how old was she? Did she get first class medical treatment? Was she living here or a tourist?

Please forgive me again..

Dengue is like a bad, bad, bad flu.

Breakbone Fever.

Our Brother with above post, has first hand experience!

Ten/Eleven tourists and 38 locals on my island, Hawaii, have it today.

No one died, ever.

Last time it was Maui. Reading above post shows that there is no immunity. My phone is attracting mozzies..gotta go! Lol

Don't be afraid, and don't get bit by a mosquito that bit a Dengue carrier!

Aloha

Right on..

If You Google Dengue treatment.. I don't think donating blood,...

I'd be worried about seating areas of hospital where I have much xperience in C.Mai,

Getting bit in a crowd of people by a mozzie!

As Hawaii civil defense is broadcasting every hour,

Cover your legs and arms..

I no use da mosquito repellent..

But some kind of smelly oil, or Tiger Balm

on my hands.

Stay outta crowds if mozzies are out!

I am 62 up to now i have GIVEN over 30 units of my blood, for free, mainly becasue i would like to think if i needed blood someone would help me.

I dont think a blood transfusion will help with Dengue fever, but i am not a Doctor, It starts with Flu like symptoms, then the person does not take food, and water casing the person to get weaker, it sometimes takes months to cure it,

I just had first time.....If that is joy I don't want to experience second time....

Here they sprayed last Saturday. We spray office twice a day, which I think is a terrible pollution. Don't know where they come from, some for sure from the standing water in the sewage here facepalm.gif

For the rest I guess we should rather spray some brain enhancer in our neighbors faces....

In Dengue Haemorragic Fever it is the Platelet count which is depressed. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platelet )

Platelets can be extracted from donated whole blood and transfused to correct a low platelet count which predisposes those with DHF to sometimes life threatening bleeding.

Congratulation on reaching a total of 30+ blood donations clap2.gif
