Beware room renovations at Chiang Mai Ram

If members are contemplating in-patient treatment at Chiang Mai Ram Hospital, they should be aware of ongoing room renovations.

During recent visits to a friend hospitalised there, there was hammering, banging and drilling going on every day. Already weakened by her medical condition, this was causing her distress, discomfort and anger. No doubt other patients were suffering likewise. Nurses told me of 'many complaints' with the prospect of several months of renovation work apparently still ahead.

This obviously creates a serious obstacle to any recovery from illness. The Management's decision to accept in-patients at this time and knowingly expose them to irritating noise represents questionable medical ethics.

One of my kids spent the weekend there a couple of weeks ago. My wife stayed with her Saturday night and all day Saturday and Sunday. We were on the 7th floor. I think the work was taking place on the 10th. From around 10am until around 4pm both days there was drilling and banging. It wasn't too loud but it was noticeable.

I noticed it, but I don't think my kids nor my wife noticed. If they did, they didn't seem bothered. They never mentioned anything.

In noise situations it's usually the farang who thinks noise is outrageous; Thais don't react the way we do. Thais notice but don't get angry. It's the anger and indignation farangs feel that usually bothers them more than the actual noise.

About time they did some maintenace/renovations as it has been years pleading even for a new coat of paint. Interesting how a bit of competion opening in town can spark some positive changes at least in the physical plant. Next - the quality of care?

Spot on.

Your last sentence could apply to many other day-to-day irritations here.

RAM has been undergoing renovations for at least 2 1/2 years, nothing to do with competition, started long before the Bangkok Hospital opened. Unfortuantly now in the area where people are are most affected.

I am led to believe work stops around 4pm every day, it certainly did when I was recovering after an op.

What choice do they have ?

Well, they could work on one floor, whilst relocating patients away from floor above & below. Or are they really so full, that's not possible?

Sounds great in principle but noise ie jack hammers ,drilling etc ,in a concrete building reverberates over many floors as anyone who has lived in a condo building etc would know. No simple answer.

This fact we all know and acknowledge.

When I was there visiting the drilling and banging was going on the floor directly above. I would have defied any person, Thai farang or whatever to have stayed cool with this, even when feeling 100% well. When you feel horribly ill, this kind of noise is torture.

The fact that the hospital is still cashing on on their normal charges, without even warning patients of the problem as they are admitted, is in my view inadmissable.
