FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION OF THAILAND
Excop Somyot to contest Thailand FA post

BANGKOK: -- Former national police chief Somyot Poompanmoung declared his candidature for the presidency of the Football Association of Thailand, with the simple election slogan "Fair" yesterday.

Following speculation last week that he would put his name forward for the top job in Thai football, the 60-year-old confirmed his shock move to stand in the rearranged FA vote, due to take place on February 11, at a packed press conference.

Despite having no experience in football administration, Somyot expressed his desire to run for a post that he said would allow him to "serve" the country again.

"Having been approached by Pol LtGeneral Pisan [Jundilok, a candidate who was set to stand in last month's FA election that was postponed], I was initially hesitant over whether to run for the post or not.

"However, after sounding out others and consulting several clubs as well as many senior figures in Thai football, I decided to enter the race because most of them said they want me in the association. They all said it's time for a change in Thai football.

A few years ago i am sure FIFA would have welcomed him with open arms. For the time being at least i think they are having to act a little more prudently with authorities breathing down their necks.

Personally i would say the very last thing FIFA needs is Somyot.

Is this a paid position?

Is he really so greedy/arrogant for money or media

That he's applying to be the president of something he has zero experience in??

He is Thai, of course he is arrogant, greedy and corrupt.

then there must be a s#!t load of corruption money to be made if he is interested in this position. Career scumbag.

He seems to be the right candidate for campaining for a seat with the Fifa Ethic Commission.

It never rains but it pours.

And faeces floats.

You mean he had any experience in his previous job??

From the article

After seeing him in action just prior to retirement from the cops I can only assume the "change in football" is unlikely to relate in any way to what happens on the pitch, in the training ground, or even in a stadium.

Would be interesting to know his stance on growing the game, and making Thailand a moderately decent side. They're still utter pony, as are most of the Asian / Oceanic nations.

Popcorn's ready :)

I would qualify that - he is a high ranking Thai government officer.

You may want to realign your statement. The last shall be first etc. Everybody needs a hobby in their retirement (golden years hmm he may be out of the money loop by now) years and of course their name back in the news. Vain people are that way. The glory days die hard and anything that can revive them a bit is much appreciated. He is no doubt making merit in regard to what his position will be in the next life if there is one. Christmas turkey comes to mind.

Think "tv rights". He gets a huge say in who gets 'em.

Unfortunately his timing is rotten. The corruption gravy train in football will be moving fairly slowly for a while.

Doing sweet F.A.

with the simple election slogan "Fair" yesterday. cheesy.gif cheesy.gif

With all the corruption scandals around the FIFA those days, he must have seen an opening :)

Could want his skills to be played at international level

Look out Sepp Blatter. Here's someone who could beat you at your own game.

Alternative headline...

Somyot Pursues Sweet FA

I am told ( I know little about Football, being a Rugby man myself) that most senior officials in the game invariably talk b*ll*cks.

Somyot has a fine pedigree when it comes to talking b*ll*cks.

He could be just the chap for the job.
