NRSA’s Kanit: Media reform committee to speed up overhaul in six areas

BANGKOK, 6 December 2015 (NNT) - A member of the National Reform Steering Assembly has affirmed that the committee in charge of media reform is set to speed up the overhaul in six areas it has eyed on.

Chairman of the NRSA’s committee on the reform of mass communications ACM Kanit Suwannate said that the committee is now ready to propose its working plan to the main NRSA meeting on December 9.

ACM Kanit said that the committee has resolved that there are six areas which need urgent reform and they are, the amendment of parts of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission Act, the radio taxi service, the community radio business, the satellite TV business, the satellite industry and the amendment of the Printing Act.

He added that the upcoming media reform is also aimed at ensuring rights and freedom of the press while reporting news from the field although everything must be based on accountability, fairness and ethics and moral.

Well said, junta member! Finally something I can agree with.

"....although everything must be based on accountability, fairness and ethics and moral."

Oooops! Guess I was a bit quick off the mark.

Wow....

Ok.. New laws for all communication in and out of Yhailand.

CB Radios, Emergency Broadcasting, TV, Satallites.

Laws are ok. The Do's & Don'ts is the new law.

I heard of top down leadership.

I heard of bottom up leadership.

But leadership from vague to obscure is the sail Yhailand wishes to declare.

I love Thailand as much as you who read these rants.

My Christmas wish...Please let God help our country.

The 2007 Constitution fairly well accomplished those freedoms and rights:

Section 36. A person shall enjoy the liberty of communication by lawful means.

The censorship, detention or disclosure of communication between persons including any other act of disclosing a statement in the communication between persons shall not be made except by virtue of the law specifically enacted for security of the State or maintaining public order or good morals.

Section 45. A person shall enjoy the liberty to express his opinion, make speech, write, print, publicise, and make expression by other means.

The closure of a newspaper or other mass media business in deprivation of the liberty under this section shall not be made.

The prevention of a newspaper or other mass media from printing news or expressing their opinions, wholly or partly, or interference in any manner whatsoever in deprivation of the liberty under this section shall not be made except by the provisions of the law enacted in accordance with the provisions of paragraph two.

The censorship by a competent official of news or articles before their publication in a newspaper or other mass media shall not be made except during the time when the country is in a state of war; provided that it must be made by virtue of the law enacted under the provisions of paragraph two.

But apparently it didn’t provide enough control over the Thai People.

Media reform aimed at ensuring rights and freedom of the press – yeah, sure!

The junta-head and his henchmen have done everything possible to “punitively” reform the media in this country, and still have the unmitigated gall to make statements like this.

If they want to do some true reforming of the media, they need focus their attention no further than their own bastion of discombobulation, fabrication, and blatant propaganda - the National News Bureau of Thailand!

Said organisation clearly has no accountability, fairness and ethics and moral (sic).

If it is true that the army owns three television stations, this in itself runs counter to democratic society principles. No doubt, the little general is trying to figure out how to nationalize all print, broadcast, and social media. Once that is done, he will likely deploy loudspeaker teams and leaflet drops to expedite mass attitude adjustment, viz., his way or the highway.
