BANGKOK: -- Justice Minister Paiboon Koomchaya and Education Minister Dapong Ratanasuwan met yesterday to come up with solutions for student brawls.

Dapong told reporters that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had assigned the two ministries to jointly see if any laws could be applied to prevent and tackle such problems as well as find other possible solutions.

He said the guideline being considered now would emphasise protection and prevention, as well as creating awareness so students studying at vocational and technical colleges learn to restrain themselves from engaging in such brawls.

The Education Ministry has already joined the private sector in having many vocational/technical college students undergo job training with a salary so they realise that they have a bright future ahead, and refrain from participating in brawls when invited by their seniors, he said.

The number of student brawls has actually halved from the previous figure of students from 27 colleges (seven public and 20 private ones) engaging in brawls, Dapong said. He said the ministry would consider giving more power to the Semarak Centre, which functions as student inspectors, to help police tackle the issue efficiently.

Paiboon said they were also getting four groups to help solve the problem, including students, parents, educational institutes and outsider groups such as alumni. He said they would adopt a positive approach in tackling this issue rather than using suppression tactics, like the approach used to deal with street races and entertainment venues close to schools, and the punishment may cover parents.

Why do they need 2 ministries to waste their time and money on this? If their is a brawl between rival schools the simplest solution is for the schools and ministry to ban the students involved from going to to school and arresting them for whatever crime is related to their actions. Their may be a few more brawls once implemented but after that the rest of the students will learn their education is gone as well as their futures without a college degree. They need an incentive that has repercussions for their actions.

As we seem to be back on the road to 1976 again, why not use the obvious talents of these young men and recreate the Red Gaurs?

Red Gaurs

The Red Gaurs were ex-mercenaries and men discharged from the army for disciplinary infractions, [plenty of these available, statue purchasers, human traffikers etc.] while their followings were mainly composed of unemployed vocational school graduates, high-school dropouts, unemployed street corner boys, slum toughs and so forth.[21] They were essentially a motley group of hooligans and thugs who were not recruited primarily on the basis of ideological commitment but rather by promises of high pay, abundant liquor and brothel privilege and the lure of public notoriety.[22] Hence, unlike the Village Scouts and the Nawaphon movement, the Red Gaurs’ establishment was less ideological than sociological. In the early 1970s, they found themselves in dire economic straits, unable to obtain employment and thus were easy targets for the anti-(successful) student and anti-worker propaganda.[23] Their grievances were thus exploited by the state, and [deleted according to forum rules] and directed toward the student protesters.

It should be "Parents Tasked With Bringing Their Kids Up Right".

I was terrified to even smoke a cigarette or even let my Mom know I smoked till I was about 30. I never wanted my parents to think ill of me.

I joined the Army reserves when I was 17 and was DETERMINED to NOT FAIL, as I didn't want to disappoint my Dad.

Talk about shame and "Loss of Face"! I would have rather died than disappoint my parents, especially by getting into gang warfare!
