Why Is Hair Dyeing Banned at School?

At high schools throughout Cambodia, students have been instructed not to dye their hair. The national education regulation instructs all public and private high schools throughout Cambodia are to observe the directive.

Some students have expressed strong disappointment in the edict, saying they couldn’t wait to dye their hair as soon as they graduate. They viewed hair-dyeing as both an art form and a means of expressing themselves and their tastes in fashion.

Beltei International School student Noun Sonisa, 16, saw hair highlighting as a form of self-expression. Although she is currently observing the school’s restrictions, she said she was keen to try highlighting someday.
