Leaders vie for Facebook fans
Wed, 9 December 2015

The Asia Foundation is undertaking a monthly survey of the top 20 Khmer Facebook pages, now in its third month, and has found that Cambodian party leaders have some of the most popular Facebook pages, and are successfully engaging users on issues they want to promote.

Cambodia National Rescue Party president Sam Rainsy’s Facebook page was the second most popular in the Kingdom, with 1.67 million likes (or fans) in the first month the survey was conducted, beaten only by news website Voice of America which had 2.2 million followers. The Post Khmer’s page was in third spot, while Prime Minister Hun Sen’s page lagged behind, with 37 per cent fewer fans than his CNRP opponent. But the prime minister was closing the gap fast, according to Asia Foundation representative for Cambodia Silas Everett.

“On current trends, it is likely that Hun Sen will have surpassed Sam Rainsy in terms of Facebook likes by 2017,” he said.
