Six dead, one missing in new Chiang Mai floods

CHIANG MAI: -- The death toll in Chiang Mai's new flooding reached six on Tuesday while government workers are continuing the search for another missing person.

Military personnel and Border Patrol Police are searching for the missing villager after 11 villages in Fang district were hit by flash floods.

Officials have distributed food and drinking water to help flood victims and related rehabilitation operations have begun

A mudslide blocking the road leading to Doi Ang Khang has been cleared and Lt-Gen. Jiradet Khacharat, Third Army Region commander Tuesday inspected damage by helicopter and directed relief operations to help flood victims.

Fang district chief Bunluesak Thephasdin na Ayutthaya said villagers in inaccessible areas received assistance. Now, they need basic necessities, including food supplies and their homes need fixing. The district is evaluating damages for further assistance.

Today I went up to Ban Yang with a team from Chiang Mai News and distributed supplies we had purchased for the locals.

The rescue effort is in full swing (with the Thai Army) and I was told there are 7 confirmed fatalities and something like 27 people missing. The task is huge and people need household items (e.g cooking utensils).

The devastation is terrible.
