Senior army officer flies to Buri Ram to investigate illegal arms trade through the internet

THAILAND -- Deputy commander of the 2nd Army Region Maj-Gen Sakda Preanavin flew to Buri Ram province on Thursday to oversee the investigation into a case in which two youths were arrested with war weapons they bought through the Facebook page.

The two youths were reported to age 17 and 18. Their identities were not disclosed because they are still regarded as minor.

The latest arrest of the two youths in Buri Ram province followed an earlier arrest of a number of youths on December 14 together with war weapons they put on sale on Facebook page.

Army troops raided a house in Tambon Ban Bua which was used by the two youths in storing the war weapons they bought from the Cambodian border through the Facebook page.

A search of the house unveiled a large amount of M79 brenades, one .38 calibre pistol, 21 flares and dozens of AK47 ammunition as well as drug using equipments.

BURI RAM: -- Second Army Region deputy chief Maj-General Sakda Perunavin told the press yesterday that the teens confessed to buying the weapons and ammunition from an eastern border province supplier via social media and storing them at an abandoned house. Police are trying to locate the supplier.

The teenagers reportedly told police that they sold the weapons and sent them to customers via the post, including M-79 grenades for Bt1,700, after buying them for Bt900 apiece.

After their friend was arrested on December 14, they said they moved the items to the abandoned house in a bid to avoid detection.
