Finding a teaching job as Non Native (but perfect English speaker)

Featured Replies

Hello

I was born in a non native English speaking country but I lived, worked and taught (part time) in USA for 15 years and I speak, write English perfectly.

I have a BA degree in economics but I don't have a TEFL certificate;

I want ask this forum what are the chances to find a English Taching job as a not native here in Thailand.

thank you

There is no need to have TEFL or equivalent nor is there any need to be a native speaker. It really is between you and the school. You need to find a school to offer you a job. The best thing to do is get your paperwork organised and present yourself at schools.

Your economics degree should suffice in terms of getting a waiver from the Teachers Council of Thailand, but your employer will take care of that.

However there are many pitfalls and if you scan this forum you should get a good sense of the various stunts you're likely to encounter.

Test then... is it Peeling.. or Feeling...

It is the internet.

Stay on topic or face a suspension.

Hi. Eventually (after 90days of your initial visa) you would need to get TOEIC certificate. You can take the exam in Bangkok it costs around 2000Baht. This is a requirements for Non-Native English speakers who would teach in English (subject isn't matter) by Krusapa (Education body of Thailand).

For initial visa you would need to get a job and your degree. Don't expect your school to know stuff for you.

The same here (except for the living-in-the-US part).

Can you be more specific?

How can we find these schools?

What areas are best for us to look in?

Chances are good, mate. Loads of non-native English speakers with a good command of the language teaching here. Not having a TEFL or related certificate might hurt your chances though. I'm a native English speaker with a degree in English and experience teaching and I still occasionally get hung up on not having a TEFL. Government schools seem to care less about it though. As has been stated above, you will need a TOEIC score. You might not need this before you are offered a job, but having a score would certainly help.

Ajarn.com is a good website for finding teaching jobs. Otherwise you gotta do some legwork. Decide where you want to live and go to the schools in the area.
