Thailand comes 93rd place in UN’s survey of world’s most liveable countries

The United Nations this week released the 2015 rankings of most livable countries based on their status of basic human development achievements with Thailand falling to the 93rd from 89th in previous ranking.

Thailand valued 0.726 for human development index or HDI in the report released by United Nations Development Programme(UNDP).

Coming on top of the ranking was Norway with HDI of 0.94, and Niger at the bottom of 0.348.

The 0.94 HDI score made Norway one of the best countries to live in among 188 countries surveyed.

The HDI is an average measure of basic development achievements in a country. It determines a country’s position on its rank scale by examining the statistical metric Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, a metric that attempts to emphasize the expansion of human choice as the criteria for assessing development results.

The report highlighted several options for human development through improvements in the employment strategies that focus on employment-led growth and a comprehensive macroeconomic framework, and, extending a living income and other safeguarding measures to the 73% of the world’s population that is without comprehensive social protections.

Thailand had made progresses in each of the HDI indicators. Between 1980 and 2014, Thailand’s life expectancy at birth increased by 10.0 years, mean years of schooling increased by 3.6 years and expected years of schooling increased by 5.6 years. Thailand’s GNI per capita increased by about 277.4 percent between 1980 and 2014.

Will that go in the achievements list due any day?

Incomplete. It fails to take into account the great achievements Thailand has made in fostering corruption.

Thailand in the Top 100 - could be worse!

Looking at the top 20, I'd rather live here than any of those.

Would that be related to your username?

"...Thailand falling to the 93rd ..."

I don't think the government is going to send out a news release claiming Thailand to be "The hub of 93rd place".

"...expected years of schooling increased by 5.6 years."

Not necessarily the same as years of "education".

Have you ever been to any one of those to make that statement. Or is it simply because those other countries don't have ladyboys.

What! No military juntas in the leading countries and bringing happiness and prosperity to their fellow citizens.

Touch wood for HK!

Israel is an interesting one.

Anyway, well done Thailand for only dropping four places, all things considered.

I've been to 8 of them and I'm a citizen of 2 of them.

Ladyboyland and the United Queendom of Ladyboy?

Like PondLife, I would rather live here than any of the top 20. And I have been to then all except Iceland.

A little more from the UNDP regarding the Human Development Index

(from the data site)

"The Human Development Index (HDI) is a summary measure of average achievement in key dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, being knowledgeable and have a decent standard of living. The HDI is the geometric mean of normalized indices for each of the three dimensions.

The health dimension is assessed by life expectancy at birth, the education dimension is measured by mean of years of schooling for adults aged 25 years and more and expected years of schooling for children of school entering age. The standard of living dimension is measured by gross national income per capita. The HDI uses the logarithm of income, to reflect the diminishing importance of income with increasing GNI. The scores for the three HDI dimension indices are then aggregated into a composite index using geometric mean. "

In the most recent ranking, how does Thailand compare to the top-ranked country, Norway?

1. Life Expectancy at Birth

Norway - 81.6 years

Thailand - 74.4 years

2. Expected Years of Schooling

Norway - 17.5

Thailand - 13.5

3. Mean Years of Schooling (achieved)

Norway - 12.6

Thailand - 7.3

4. Gross National Income Per Capita (PPP basis)

Norway - $64,992

Thailand - $13,323

This kind of survey has nothing to do with a few retired farangs living on overseas income and a young bar wife keeping him company.

The majority of Thais dont live in Phuket,Pattaya,Hue Hin and Cha am or Bangkok. They live unstable lives in backwater villages and most cant escape the endless cycle of poverty unless theyre lucky enough to marry an old foreign man. Rich Thais in Bangkok have a high quality of life comperable with those in the west.Thailand is 93rd because of the appalling injustice of the rich keeping the poor down. The seafood industry is a perfect example.

Income ppp $13000 /annum......meaningless stat... 15,000 baht a month is considered a good income for millions of Thais $6000/annum. Many make half that.

I hope Prayut breaks this news in his usual Friday speech wow 93 rd

I am surprised it is so high but these suveys are not that accurate!

The USA is the only place in the top 20 where I would actually CHOOSE to live.

The others, too wet, too cold, too expensive.

And Israel ....... I guess they've never been to Israel ..... unlivable in every conceivable way.

High crime rate, full of religious extremists and Zealots, terrorist attacks daily, racial oppression, etc.

They must have bribed someone to get in the top 20.

Oh, I see my ex country Serbia is ranked 66. So why people don't go there? I can assure you it's cheaper, food is 100 better and women are hotter.

Do they not? The UK has ladyboys, but that's not what they are called.

What are they called? Before anyone asks. Transvestites.

You are absolutely right.

But I still prefer to live here & I suspect you also live here when you have the choice to live somewhere else.

More commonly called Queer's

PPP = Purchasing power parity. This list is the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP) divided by the number of people. It isn't income per capita (per person.) It's national income.

The US as an example is at $54,000.

These numbers mean nothing to the average Thai who earns nowhere near that figure whereas in the West, people do.

No, queers are what homosexual guys are called, transvestites are guys who dress in womens clothes, although, like in Thailand, they are still homosexual or bisexual.

The survey doesn't really mean anything to me, been in about 15 of the top 20 and comes from one of the top 5 countries and don't really want to go back.

cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif so crime ridden poverty stricken for many USA is better is it or anywhere in west full of nonsense PC and total lack of real freedoms. Give me Thailand anyway what a load of crap

Looks more like a leader board for countries with the highest income tax rates.. If paying more tax equate to a better lifestyle I'm the Pope's left testicle..
