Thailand comes 93rd place in UN’s survey of world’s most liveable countries

The United Nations this week released the 2015 rankings of most livable countries based on their status of basic human development achievements with Thailand falling to the 93rd from 89th in previous ranking.

Thailand valued 0.726 for human development index or HDI in the report released by United Nations Development Programme(UNDP).

Coming on top of the ranking was Norway with HDI of 0.94, and Niger at the bottom of 0.348.

The 0.94 HDI score made Norway one of the best countries to live in among 188 countries surveyed.

The HDI is an average measure of basic development achievements in a country. It determines a country’s position on its rank scale by examining the statistical metric Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, a metric that attempts to emphasize the expansion of human choice as the criteria for assessing development results.

The report highlighted several options for human development through improvements in the employment strategies that focus on employment-led growth and a comprehensive macroeconomic framework, and, extending a living income and other safeguarding measures to the 73% of the world’s population that is without comprehensive social protections.

Thailand had made progresses in each of the HDI indicators. Between 1980 and 2014, Thailand’s life expectancy at birth increased by 10.0 years, mean years of schooling increased by 3.6 years and expected years of schooling increased by 5.6 years. Thailand’s GNI per capita increased by about 277.4 percent between 1980 and 2014.

Incomplete. It fails to take into account the great achievements Thailand has made in fostering corruption.

This kind of survey has nothing to do with a few retired farangs living on overseas income and a young bar wife keeping him company.

The majority of Thais dont live in Phuket,Pattaya,Hue Hin and Cha am or Bangkok. They live unstable lives in backwater villages and most cant escape the endless cycle of poverty unless theyre lucky enough to marry an old foreign man. Rich Thais in Bangkok have a high quality of life comperable with those in the west.Thailand is 93rd because of the appalling injustice of the rich keeping the poor down. The seafood industry is a perfect example.

Income ppp $13000 /annum......meaningless stat... 15,000 baht a month is considered a good income for millions of Thais $6000/annum. Many make half that.

I am surprised it is so high but these suveys are not that accurate!

The USA is the only place in the top 20 where I would actually CHOOSE to live.

The others, too wet, too cold, too expensive.

And Israel ....... I guess they've never been to Israel ..... unlivable in every conceivable way.

High crime rate, full of religious extremists and Zealots, terrorist attacks daily, racial oppression, etc.

PPP = Purchasing power parity. This list is the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP) divided by the number of people. It isn't income per capita (per person.) It's national income.

The US as an example is at $54,000.

These numbers mean nothing to the average Thai who earns nowhere near that figure whereas in the West, people do.

The survey doesn't really mean anything to me, been in about 15 of the top 20 and comes from one of the top 5 countries and don't really want to go back.
