PM: EPPO to lay down 20-year energy plan

BANGKOK, 22 December 2015, (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has indicated that the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) is laying down a 20-year energy plan.

The premier recently attended a meeting with EPPO, where officials reported on volatility in the global economy and in prices. The meeting concluded that Thailand must be prepared for global economic changes by laying down a 20-year energy plan for residential, industrial and commercial sectors.

Gen Prayut said the office would establish a committee to facilitate the shift from renewable energy adder rates to feed-in tariffs. The committee would also address past issues of power plants getting approved without transmission lines and power plants operating without a license.

The Prime Minister also affirmed that he has discussed sharing water from Stung Num hydropower dam with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, during the latter's visit last week. The dam provides power to the eastern region of Thailand.

The Energy Policy and Planning Office in 2015 has decided the country needs a long term energy plan.

Well done! Let's form a committee and then take a much-needed break.

I would like to highlight the fine web site of the Energy Policy and Planning Office, which features a "Hot Section" front and center on the home page.

The most recent "Hot" item is from September 2011.

Two items from 2008.

Two items from 2007.

"Gen Prayut said the office would establish a committee to facilitate the shift from renewable energy adder rates to feed-in tariffs."

Looks like someone read the 2013 “An Assessment of Thailand’s feed-in tariff program” by the Research Institute, Chulalongkorn University. With the overthrow of the Yingluck regime government implementation of its recommendations were obviously delayed.

Nice to see that Prayut can mimic the planning and strategies of the previous government and present it as its own.
