PHNOM PENH – British businessman Gregg Fryett has lost his appeal for bail in Phnom Penh municipal court. Fryett has spent more than two years in jail in Cambodia, accused of breach of trust, forging documents and money laundering, and yesterday Presiding Judge Choun Soreasey denied his appeal for bail without any explanation.

However, Mr. Fryett told the court that there is new evidence discovered by the Ministry of Interior that could prove his innocence, and that is why he made his bail plea. Mr. Fryett’s defense attorney, Peung Sopheap, told the court, “The new evidence found by Ministry of Interior proves that my client has nothing to do with land grabbing and deforestation; what he did was the investment on the land owned by local communities, by hiring those local people as workers for his company.”
