The government and the opposition have agreed to set up a joint commission to review a controversial draft union law that has caused concern among employers and unions alike, as well as rights groups. Union leaders say the proposed law would take away many heard-earned rights, but employer groups say it panders to the unions and the International Labor Organization (ILO) and fails to address the industrial relations problems the private sector routinely confronts.

The joint commission will include five lawmakers each from the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP). “Each party is no longer taking advantage of this debate for their own political interests,” said Ath Thorn, head of the Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers Democratic Union (CCAWDU).
