The head of the Phnom Penh Prison has been kicked out and replaced.

The change at the top comes a week after Prime Minister Hun Sen called on prisons to strictly comply with procedures for pardons and sentence reductions, in response to a rash of recent crimes committed by former prisoners.

A statement from the Interior Ministry released yesterday announced the removal of Hu Put Visal as director of the Phnom Penh Prison. The statement, dated December 2, said Visal would become deputy director of the Interior Ministry Correctional Department, and he would be replaced by the Interior Ministry’s Pich Un.

The deputy director of the Interior Ministry’s Prison Department, Nuth Savna, said the change of leadership is not related to alleged bribes for sentence reductions and early releases.
