Cambodian PM vows dual nationality ban for politicians

Featured Replies

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia's strongman premier Hun Sen vowed on Monday (Dec 28) to create a new law banning political party leaders from holding dual nationality, a move targeting his arch-rival who has fled overseas.

The nation has been plunged into a political crisis after an arrest warrant was issued last month for Sam Rainsy - the most prominent opposition leader - who has a Cambodian and a French passport. He fled to France, declaring the charges against him were politically motivated.

Hun Sen said the new law would be passed next year and affect political party leaders and people holding positions in some key institutions, requiring them to hold only Cambodian nationality.

PM’s pledge: ‘no pardon’ for Rainsy
Tue, 29 December 2015

Prime Minister Hun Sen has vowed to create a new law barring political party leaders from holding dual nationalities, an apparent move to further incapacitate beleaguered CNRP president Sam Rainsy.

In his latest tirade against his long-time political rival, the premier also vowed to never again request a royal pardon for Rainsy, who in November entered his third stint of self-imposed exile to avoid prison on charges widely perceived as politically motivated.

Addressing more than 3,000 graduating students at the Koh Pich Center in Phnom Penh, Hun Sen yesterday called for two amendments to the Law on Political Parties, both appearing to be personally aimed at Rainsy, who also holds French citizenship.

All together now EU - give nationality to Hun Sen on a rotating basis faster than he can disavow it.
