Hi there. Can anyone recommend a top notch computer genius in CM ?? Prefferably one that speaks English as my technical Thai is somewhat <deleted>..

What is the problem?

Hey Blinky. I had a crash about 8 months ago and had to replace my hard disk drive, when they, an IT shop in Pantip Bkk re-installed windows XP i think they may have used a counterfeit copy as windows is now telling me that "my copy is not genuine" and will no longer recieve security updates. This has been happening for about 2 weeks now and it had thrown everything into caos.. I am prepared to re-install an 'original windows XP' if i have to, but i woudn't know where to start without losing everything..I still have 80 odd days left on my 'original' symantec anti-virus' and even that has spat the dummy, it all works fine for a while (like now) then s**ts itself again.. Any ideas ?? Cheers.

I bought a new computer at pantip and the XP installed was counterfeit but after a couple of months Microsoft began to notify me and downloaded the updates. No problem!

What chaos is being caused? It likely has nothing to do with upgrades.

You can get free anti virus and spyware progs that are just as good as the commercially paid for stuff. Check the computer forum. I have AVG antivirus works just fine and spybot both free and come with regular updates.

AVG not so ............................http://www.grisoft.com/............. easy. Check computer forum.

go here for the Free AVG. its kinda tricky to get the free version. but this is it. it works brilliantly on my com.

AVG is good. Dump the Symantec.....

Might suggest you also download (free) and run Lavasoft Ad-Aware. Also Webroot's Window Washer (free 30 trial version) to clean up all your Temporary Internet, cache, history files. This will free up an awful lot of disc space. Also run Disk Defragmenter in your System tools. (Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools).

Good luck.

Although Symantecs Antivirus is slow and memory consuming it usually actually does it work... Assuming OP has got it running and updated properly, it isn't virus that is the most likely cause for his problems and merely installing some more virus/cleanware isn't likely to solve the problems as described (but more likely to add to his problems due to conflicting virus-programs ... Uninstalling Symantic clean off seldom is a smooth affair).

OP's problem are more likely related to Microsofts handling of counterfeits ... Here's a link to one of the lenghty exchanges that has been running in the Internet forum of this site:

Call Khun Suchart. He'll come to your house and take care of everything. Very reasonable too. What I like about him is, if a problem at first seems insoluble, he'll keep plugging away till a solution is reached; wheras most here just give up. His number is: 089- 5563931

If you can find a shop that has genuine XP in Chiang Mai you are doing good. If you do find the shop it will cost you more than downloading the key (and paying for it) thru the Microsoft website. I did it and no problems after that getting upgrades. I used my credit card to make the purchase. Simple and easy.

very good link Tigerbeer

they seem to keep moving the free version

would agree to the AVG / spybot / lavasoft Ad-Aware SE personal solution especially as they are free

but dont forget the Zonealarm firewall and turn that piece of microsh#t rubbish off

thats the windows firewall to all computer newbies

also use vlc media player plays nearly everything and installs no malware

get yourself an external hard drive and back up to regular

but remember to turn the adaptor off when you shut the computer down

most forget

Beyond AVG, you need a good spyware remover also (check www.download.com and see how users rate the different spyware removers). Spyware is a huge source of computer slowdowns and strange messages.

Not having a genuine copy of Windows is not going to cause any problems other than having to see the message every once in a while. You STILL will receive the critical updates for security (so that you don't pass on crap to legit owners of Windows). It is only "select" updates that are nonessential to security that they won't allow you to download.

ANTI VIRUS .. is a waste of time .

Really bad advise! There are many who do not know their way around computers. There are many other means to get a virus other then e-mail (and yes, I know 80% comes from e-mail), especially in Thailand. This includes CDs, shared USB flash drives, even floppies which some still use. Before I locked down our laboratory network with a firewall and virus pre-scanner on the firewall I was fighting viruses regularly on our staff computers (about 100+ machines) because they were lax in keeping uptodate or forget to install one after re-installing an OS.

Not everyone in the lab knows the ropes when it comes to viruses and I have to protect them from themselves. Every computer has a virus scanner as a secondary defense and now have rarely seen a virus at the lab. Except a few days ago a researcher had a detected virus on the computer screen, came from a CD. Without the virus protection on it, well you know what can happen.

The advise to have a virus scanner on your computer is solid, to not have one is potential for a major headache.

and use Norton Go back. Resets the hard drive back to before you *ucked up.

If you purchase a copy of Windows XP that is a bootleg, get all your window upgrades from disks they sell at your local bootleg store... not from Msoft.

And of course use anti-virus.

I had exactly the same prob with my computer, [getting a warning from microshaft]

and I ignored the pop-up warning...until one day the whole system crashed....

I took advice, wiped the hard disc and installed a linux operating system, which took a while to master, but now it is up and running beautifully......no adware, spyware, or glitches...and it is FREE! No more money for Bill Gates!!!

I only use the computer for email, visiting a few news sites, and photo editing.....and am a happy chappy.

Whether you are running a network or a single PC, security needs to be installed from the ground up. It should not be considered an “optional extra”, rather, an intrinsic part of any system build.

Installing any security application on an already heavily infected computer is not going to completely solve your problems – you need a rebuild. Archive your documents and email containers (with a virus scan) and start again from a newly formatted HDD.

I do not use the free version of AVG only because I have a network licence. But, as “freebies” go, it is not bad and neither is the free version of Zone Alarm (basic firewall). Also you may wish to consider the occasional use of applications such as Adaware and Spybot. But, as with most things in life, you get what you (or don’t) pay for.

Personally, I am not a fan of McAfee or Norton – too much bloatware and license cost.

However, any security application is better than nothing. To run an Internet-connected PC without some anti-virus or firewall application is folly. You may also wish to consider the risk of malware such as Trojan horses if you use your PC for activities like Internet banking. Look into the terms and conditions for using such applications; some banks are now taking a tougher line on customers who allege fraudulent activity on their (Internet accessed) accounts.

Any flavour of *nix is great, as long as you know what you are doing – a badly configured build can actually cause you more problems because of the nature of open-source software. A hacker can abuse the functionality and network ability of Windows, but can gain root access to an insecure *nix system.

You will never remove all risk, only mitigate the threats that you know. Your own risk very much depends on what you do with your PC. For example, the use of peer to peer file sharing applications such as KaZaA will always add to your risk of some infection, despite what is claimed about their “Lite” version.

With regards to licences, I recently had a problem with a laptop I had bought to Asia from Europe. I phoned Microsoft (local free-phone number) and got my licence key re-verified – they were actually pretty helpful!

IMHO!

Good luck.

Not great advice to operate a computer without an anti-virus program. Simply being online can open you up to all sorts of attack options from unscrupulous individuals from Eastern Europe :o

AVG is defo available from download.com and is fast and efficient and updates automatically most days. As an example I scanned my mothers PC with her current and updated version of McAfee (nothing picked up), downloaded and installed AVG and ran another scan and it picked up a trojan (pretty sure it never came bundled with AVG :D ). Removing McAfee is a bit of a pain manually but there is a removal tool on the McAfee site which does the lot. You may find that your computer runs a lot faster without it, especially if it is an older, slower model.

Regards Windows' WGA notification; it is a pain in the ass and there are several ways to remove it but make sure you select the option to 'notify you before installing' future updates after removing it or it will find it's way on there again.

How much for the key if bought through the website?

I paid $149.00 in 2005 directly from Microsoft. It sounds like the genuine program is here in CNX and the price is right now that Pantip has opened and more shops are in competition with each other. Last year I could only find one shop that would bother getting it.
