THAILAND -- The Taling Chan Provincial Court today sentenced 18 motorists three months in prison with no suspension, and seized 24 cars after finding them guilty of street racing.

All their seized cars were kept at Bang Khae highway police office.

They were arrested on the night of December 25 after they blocked traffic on a section of Kanchanapisek motorway to race.

A total of 28 cars and pickup truck were engaged in the race, and 20 racers and their supporters arrested.

The mass arrest came after police received tipoff that these racers were making appointment on social media to gather on the motorway in front of the office of Samakhom Pak Tai Association to begin a race.

About 100 vehicles were said to join the street race.

A plan to arrest and seize their vehicles was then worked out with the use of Taling Chan police, highway police and volunteers.

The plan included the use of heavy trucks blocking both ends of the motorway’s express lanes from Kilometre 23 to Kilometre 27.

As over 100 cars and pickup trucks that were modified for racing proposed arrived to start the race, the police then swooped on the place and heavy trucks began blockading both ends of the expressway section.

Traffic on the motorway section was closed as crackdown operation began.

But over half of the racers and their vehicles managed to escape through the unblocked exits due to insufficient police personnel to man all exits on parallel lanes.

Only 28 vehicles, 20 cars and eight pickup trucks were seized along with drivers and their passengers.

They were taken to Taling Chan police station and faced three charges, driving with no regard to safety of others, street racing and illegal modification of vehicles.

Wow that's some serious punishment!

Yes a slap on the fore arm.for influential VIP BRATS just a small tea money fee

Don't think they are the VIP brats, they don't drive pimped Brio/Jazz/Pickup trucks.

Yea, I'm surprised these arrests resulted is such quick and serious punishment. 3 months in jail for mass street racing is healthy punishment. I figured they would just pay a fine, get their vehicles back after paying the fine, then it off to the races again. But this time they'll have to wait 3 months in jail before getting back to the street racing which I expect many will not do again.

Sentenced 3 days after the crime.... Wow

I wonder if they're allowed out on bail to appeal...?

Who give a sh*t! Let them rot in jail for a few months.

Generally, in Thailand you get bail to appeal....even for those who have done murders, Pay some fine and the sentence is commuted to a suspended one years later when everyone has forgotten the crime....

Just skimming off the cream the sour milk is still there. Do a sting outside of my condo after dark same results. Selective police at best when/where they can shoot fish in a barrel.

They should auction off the cars - put the money into more preventative programs to stop people from dragging.

If there's any rule of law in the country any proceeds would have to go first to any lender who had a lien on the car.

3/4+ of the racers "escaped"

The police are so useless they knew about this crime in advance and they didn't bring enough officers or block the road properly...

Where are the army? Surely between them both they could have done a better job than letting 3/4s escape, especially as this "operation" had days to plan...

Good work. Best to clamp down hard on these thugs now before it becomes a huge social problem as has happened in the UK.

Don`t worry, the thugs that were caught will soon grass up their mates, they always do.

I live close to where this happened and 2 hours ago i saw some cars racing in busy traffic.

At night the racing kids come on the roads, on scooters/motobikes and cars. They race like there's no tomorrow and even don't wear helmets, lights and don't care for any rules. This happens EVERY night in the area but the Police never do anything.

Tonight a saw a policeman on a big bike on the main road, he had a plastic bag hanging on his steer with 2 boxes Johnnie Walker in it thumbsup.gifgigglem.gif

Thailand only.wai2.gif

See through bags huh?

Nope it was a white plastic bag but i know very well what a box of Johnnie Walker black label looks like tongue.png

I saw 2 of them bungling in that bag hanging on the steer.

Since the General is in charge i haven't seen serious measurements like this, this is more Thaksin-style i would think.

Closing the highway so the boys can race on it, cheesy.gif I've never ever heard of something like that happening in Europe. Thailand is never boring gigglem.gif

The only problem with this idea is the cars are most likely on hire purchase with the banks

So the cars are not the property of the idiots

So the BIB will find out which cars are not fully paid for and the rest will disappear, then the banks financing the cars will repossess the rest as there will be no payments for three months. Some how the BIB will end up with these on a discount.

In a sense they are, bank managers are idiots for irresponsibly lending to the kind of people who buy a car and then modify it for street racing. A lot of idiotic lending going on to people and companies who cannot pay back. Household debt a huge problem for the economy.

Not a problem for the lending bank, but a problem for the guarantor of the loan.

Similar treatment for the motorcycle racers would be appropriate.

Ive seen them confiscate bikes from kids before... But i think they get them back when their dad pays a 500thb at the station.....

If dad had to buy another one, the law would be taken a lot more seriously.... :)
