Dengue Cases Triple this Year

Cambodia has reported 15,015 dengue fever cases in the first 50 weeks of this year, a more than 300 percent rise from the 3,611 cases over the same period last year, according to figures released yesterday.

The rate was 92.8 cases out of 100,000 people, according to a report posted to the website of the National Center for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control, adding that the mosquito-borne virus killed 37 people this year, 16 more than last year.

“Though dengue fever cases have increased this year, the surge is at a controllable level,” the center’s director Huy Rekol said in the report. He added that about 71 percent of the patients were children aged between five and 14 years old.
