PM holds private family prayers instead of public New Year appearance

BANGKOK, 31 December 2015 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has chosen not to make a public appearance and instead led his family in privately held prayers to usher in the New Year.

Government Spokesperson Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the Prime Minister wished the people happiness in their New Year activities. For those traveling to other provinces, he urged them to follow road rules and to drive carefully, with compassion for their fellow motorists.

Gen Prayut expressed his wish to stay with family at home and to pray and meditate on the country. He explained that a public appearance would require a large security detail, which can be inconvenient to other people.

The Prime Minister gave his thanks for all agencies responsible for administering New Year activites in his place.

He needs to get a lot better at praying to sort out this mess.

it's difficult to even construct a reply without being rude and pointing out your obvious limitations

'Thaksin's lot'? you mean the elected Yingluck 'lot'? and you are angry most of us are against the 'lot' with guns? you know Gingag the 'lot' who cart Thai citizens to 'attitude camps' and forbid more than 5 gathering but allow 200 ultra nationalists much like yourself to 'gather' at the embassy? maybe you are blind, ignorant or just 'something else'... i think I know the answer but I'll leave you guessing

have a lovely new years eve unlike many who might have 'liked' an FB post etc. I actually feel sorry for you

Most of the Thais I speak to are struggling to better their lives. Your good general has just been a disruptive force. He has not and will not accomplish reconciliation and he has decimated foreign investment. Staying home was the best decision he has made in recent memory.

Defamation is the issuance of a statement about another person or business which causes that person to suffer harm. It does not have to be false to be defamatory. Libel is when the defamatory statement is published either in a drawing, painting, cinematography, film, picture or letters made visible by any means, or any other recording instruments, recording picture or letters, or by broadcasting or spreading picture, or by propagation by any other means. Defamation is both a civil and criminal charge in Thailand.

Expect a Suspension if you post like this in the future. Keep it Civil, and Respectful of others.

I think this is called "Keeping your head down".

"He explained that a public appearance would require a large security detail"

Surely with a 99.3% "we just adore you" rating security isn't an issue?

he should just stay home... forever.

he knows they can't make the streets safe(from drunks) so he's staying home

Does that include those who are drunk with power?

Maybe we need one of those polls so we can show how devastated we all are at this news.

Khun Prayuth is the best person to rule the country THIS moment. Beware us of the Shinawatra Maffioso

That is your opinion.

The decision should be made by the Thai electorate.

Streets were empty last night in my neck of the woods. A few pops and crackles of fireworks during the evening and at midnight not a soul to be seen. Never seen a quieter New Year's Eve celebration in my 10 or so years living in Los.

I suggest a good will gesture from Prayuth for the New Year would be to half the price on anti-depressants.

Interesting all those negative comments. I think some here may be a wee bit inconsistent or just forget to look at all aspects of PM Prayut's decision to hold a private family gathering.

Lots of people have been complaining that PM Prayut is on television too much. Well, his personal New Year gift was not to appear on television for a one hour speech. Now that should have made at least a lot of posters here happy.

Perhaps if you applied a bit of critical thinking instead of sucking up every last drop of propaganda from the man you might realise why, "all those negative comments".

I'm not sure if he was on TV or not ( I wouldn't give him the time of day) but in between all that familial piety he managed to fit in a New Years Message for everyone with all the usual crass hypocrisy included, so he's hardly restrained himself.

He is "banging on" on all TV channels right now!

Oh, but I do know why. I only need to look at the member names. It's the usual bunch who talk about propaganda from the government being bad. The current government that is.

So you're saying that the propaganda from this "government" is good? I'll accept that you have fully embraced the junta and will leap to their defence at every opportunity, however, what suprises me (and I'm being polite here) is that someone with presumably a western upbringing and education would do so.

What is so appealing about a military junta?

Some of us live in the real world, and speak the language as well. 99.3% published as a poll result, and you're not worried one bit? Even Gandhi wouldn't get close, neither would Martin Luther King if you had arranged a poll among black people back then.

I would encourage some critical thinking, it is said to be healthy. What do I know, though, I'm not an educated person.

To all the Prayuth bashers. Just give me a name of a better man or woman for the job.

Fine; Me.

To all the Prayuth bashers. Just give me a name of a better man or woman for the job.

Its not a question of giving you me or anyone else here the name of a better man or woman for the job. It's not our choice. It's a question of allowing the Thai electorate to choose who they want for the job. That is the whole point.

Many here think Yingkuck was incompetent, a clone, a puppet, an airhead etc (I'm sure that the usual suspects can and probably will join in enthusiastically), but she was chosen by the electorate. That is the point.

The same can be said of Thaksin...he was chosen by the electorate. That is the point.

"Yingluck's lot" - that would be the lot of the former disgraced PM Yingluck who allowed a non elected criminal to run the country, the same one who owns their political party and pays them a salary to do as told?

"Attitude camps" - carted off and eventually released, as opposed to being shot at, bombed, threatened, having shit and blood thrown at your house and coffins with your image burned; or bombs, grenades, and random shootings for daring to oppose Shin will.

"Protesters" - agree scandalous that some are allowed to break the law when others aren't. Shows how little has changed. The side in power does as it wants.

Happy New Year. Hope 2016 brings some resolve. But, I really do feel sorry for you, if you believe the Shins are transparent, honest, respect the law, accountable or remotely interested in real democracy and a just society. Every Thaksin government and proxy has lied, broken laws, ignored laws, tried to dismantle checks and balances, fiddled and done their best to stifle any criticism through suing and threatening people. The main advancement during their years has been the vast increase in their Shin family wealth.

"He explained that a public appearance would require a large security detail"

Surely with a 99.3% "we just adore you" rating security isn't an issue?

Indeed. Whereas when Yingluck made "unannounced" trips she was simply mobbed by the adoring masses who magically produced bunches of flowers and showed their undying love for the Shin pretty and darling of Isaan, the Amply Rich billionaire Yingluck.

So reminiscent of Warsaw Pact and old school communist propaganda. They always pretended to be socialists and democrats too.

How "out in force"? had you not noticed the Army with guns in control? no thought not...

Certainly not in Khampaeng Phet province where I think I have only seen the army out on the roads about 5 times since May 2013.

Perhaps it all depends on where you live.

So, the most appealing was of course the decision of PM Prayut to holds a private celebration rather than have a speech on television like other PMs and Presidents feel the need to do.

As for propaganda, that would probably be all that you don't want to believe from one side but have no problems accepting when it comes from the other side.

As seen by someone with a Dutch style upbringing and education,
