More than 600 vehicles seized in anti-drunk campaign
The Nation

THAILAND -- As of Wednesday, 612 vehicles had been seized from drunk car and motorcycle drivers since Christmas, while 104 traffic deaths have been recorded in the first two of the seven dangerous days of the year-end period.

Colonel Sirichan Ngathong, deputy spokeswoman of the military's ruling National Council for Peace and Order, said Thursday that on Wednesdayalone, Army officers manning checkpoints nationwide found 3,055 violations of the drunk-driving ban by motorcyclists, sent 3,395 of them to be cited for traffic offences and impounded 334 motorbikes.

They caught 1,654 car or public-transport drivers violating the ban, took custody of the driver's licences from 176 of them, passed 1,555 ofthem for booking and confiscated nine cars.

From December 25-30, officers detained 547 motorcycles and 65 cars and passed 4,375 motorcyclists and 2,219 car and public-transport driversfor legal action, she said.

547 motorcycles and only 65 cars seized..................

Indeed selective policing !!

Wonder how many BMW, Mercedes or Lexus have been seized??

The irony is, since art 44 is invoked, it practically gives the police carte blanche to be even more corrupt...................coffee1.gif

Lets get this straight, there were 3,055 people caught in drink drive checkpoints whilst over the limit yet only impounded 334 motorbikes, is this a positive result for the much vaunted anti drink campaign???

They also caught 1,654 van drivers over the limit yet only removed 176 of the maniacs from the road by removing their licenses???

And Thailand is saying this is a victory???

So out of 6,500ish people and vehicles over the limit in the period 25-30th only 600 cars are impounded what the firk if this is seen as a victory then the place is doomed....

Reading about bus accident in other English language newspaper, where bus driver dropped cell phone and reaching to pick it up he flipped the bus. I think they could cut down on many more deaths/accidents if they change the law=use mobile while driving a vehicle - car, motorcycle, bus etc impounded and automatic suspension of driving license for 5 years.

Complaining about institutional corruption in Thailand, are you? Apparently, you've never been to the squeaky-clean "showboat" U.S.A.?

Are you for real? Only a serious amount of hard- time spent in prison (not some Buddhist monastery), will effect a radical change in the callous public behavior of certain individual mentalities. It will give them time to develop a sense of personal accountability & civic responsibility. The example set by that incarcerated sojourn will further contribute to making a serious upgrade, to the 2,600 year-old Buddhist-based traditional values, especially should the monks ever get around to doing their jobs, for a change. whistling.gif

You are right but ... what bout the private drivers who drive buses of Universities, for example or belonging to big mills and minivans with blue plates ?

There are so many buses and minivan which are not " public ones" .

What about army buses; I can see often some of them on road 22 between Udon and Sakon Nakhon and their drivers want to be better than Ayrton Sena or Nigel Mansell whistling.gif

So, no apparent desire to exceed the speed of Schumacher or Hamilton?

They're not doing enough.Bikes&cars released at the end of the holiday season,so the culprits can do it again...Do the same as Uk minimum 1 year driving ban and a hefty fine, then perhaps they'll learn

A hefty fine might deter some of them.............as for banning them ,,,,,they would just continue to drive as per norm.

No, not seized but 'detained'. The OP talks about 612 vehicles seized. Later it mentions 334 motorcycles impounded. That should suggest 278 cars or other type of vehicles impounded as well.

Mind you, with articles like the OP numbers are just that, numbers. Any relation with the real world seems near pure coincidence.

Drink drivers are a hazard and the cause of many deaths in any country, but other hazard in Thailand is the attitude to turn a blind eye to unlicensed drivers...

IMHO I think there needs to be a fine of 5,000THB for driving without a licence, (50,000THB and possibly 6 month prison for driving while banned) and the registered keeper should also be fined 5,000THB for allowing a unlicensed person to use the vehicle. the vehicle should be impounded until the registered keeper comes to claim it and pays the fine, and it can only be driven away by licensed and insured driver, if not claimed within 3 months it can be sold off to off set the fines.
