MFA opens passport services on Saturdays

BANGKOK, 1 January 2016 (NNT) – The general public can now apply for a new passport on Saturdays, effective from January 1st and onwards for the next four months, as initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Don Pramudwinai has revealed that the MFA has extended the passport issuance service from official working days to include Saturdays, starting from today in a 4 month long campaign, as a New Year gift to the public.

He has said that the service extension comes from the fact that weekday passport issuance services are impractical for some. This campaign is designed to be people-centric in compliance with the government’s policy.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs has added the MFA will propose a campaign to the government for the construction of ASEAN Libraries in remote areas and border areas across the nation to provide access to knowledge to the public in all areas. The libraries are initially planned to be constructed in passport service offices.

The MFA has also planned to send its officials to help teach English to the youth, enhancing this crucial communication tool.

Unless you're Thai it has no relevance to you. Only for Thai passport holders.

I find much to criticise Thai bureaucracy for, but their passport service is first-class, leaving that of the likes of the UK at the starting gate. Teaching English? That's a bridge too far. The idea that Thais would replace foreign teachers of English is already in question when, on the eve of ASEAN becoming a reality, the Thais themselves are starting to recognise their shortcomings in the English language department.

Why do thai passports only last 5 years? If made them last 10 years then there would be less demand for new ones and thus the government would save money employing staff to process them?
