webfact
CDC mobile meeting focused on section 7 of the constitutionBANGKOK, 15 January 2016 (NNT)-The Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC)’s mobile meeting still focused on Section 7 of the constitution on the 4th day today.CDC members reportedly discussed the content of Section 7 which requires the person serving as Parliament Speaker to be impartial. As for the termination of senatorialship of an allegedly corrupt member, the CDC has stipulated in the draft charter that at least one-tenth of Senate members must sign up a complaint against the accused before the Charter Court could accept the case. The composition of the Senate remains unchanged, comprising 200 members to be selected from 20 social groups nationwide and among themselves. The members of the Senate will only stay in power for 5 years. The draft charter also prevents anyone who is biologically related to politicians of all levels to contend for the position in the Senate. The condition comes in line with 60% of the public suggestions that said a clause pertaining to the ban should be clearly stated in the constitution. As for the composition of the 500-seat House of Representatives, 150 will be elected from a party list system while 350 others will be elected under the constituency system. The mixed electoral system will be adopted in Thailand, and only a single ballot is used. It will also help the government save as much as 400 million baht in election expense.-- NNT 2016-01-
chainarong
With 200 elected from 20 social groups across all sections and the country is Thailand , I can only conclude that money will change hands. As for no relatives of members in the Lower house being eligible for the Senate , this only stops one avenue of nepotism, what about friends of friends, mates of mates ,corruption will still play a prominent part of Thai politics with structures like this and one can only conclude that after the CDC has spent quite a bit of resources and time on this subject they truly understand Thainess better than most............................ . Emster23
"CDC members reportedly discussed the content of Section 7 which requires the person serving as Parliament Speaker to be impartial." Once more ignoring reality... and how do we determine if speaker is or isn't impartial? One aspect I like of US Constitution is assumption people are self serving & power crazed, why we have checks and balances. "prevents anyone who is biologically related to politicians of all levels to contend for the position in the Senate." DNA tests? We are all related if go back far enough. Are we going to see housekeepers, cooks etc of powerful sitting in Senate with earphone, acting like trained puppet repeating what master offsite tells them to say? Srikcir
"The composition of the Senate remains unchanged" Will the draft constitution then have no provision for amendments to the constitution? At the rate provisions are being written into the draft by the junta-appointed bodies, the Thai constitution will become the most unconstitutional document in the world. But maybe that's the ultimate "thainess."

phoenixdoglover
Imagine...only 10% of the Senate required to send your opponent into a court proceeding. Let the games begin.
