webfact
Deputy PM: Govt sets 20-year strategy for tourismBANGKOK, 18 January 2015 (NNT) – Deputy Prime Minister Tanasak Patimapagorn said the government has set a 20-year strategy for tourism under which natural resources will be restored and local villagers will be taken care of.He said he was confident that such strategy will lead to the stability and prosperity of the country while revenues from tourism sector from 2016 – 2017 will increase from last year though it will also largely depend on the world situation. He reiterated that the government focuses on domestic tourism and urges Thai people to travel within the country while the government will continue to develop the local, regional and central tourist attractions and create new tourist spots. -- NNT 2016-01-

thesetat2013
In 20 years they won't have any tourism industry. That's why they are focusing on domestic tourism instead of international. Those quality tourists just never showed up the way they wanted and the ones they thought would be good got their money devalued and piss and shit on floors. spidermike007
This is a hysterically funny news post. Something George Carlin might have made up, if he were still alive. Thailand taking care of its villages? Since when does the Thai government care about its villages? And a 20 year plan? This government does not engage in long term planning, so since when do they have a two decade plan? This is the most short sighted administration in recent memory. The level of incompetence they bring to the table, in nearly everything they touch is astounding. They are destroying the tourism industry. Everyone I speak with, be they in hotel management, restaurants that cater to tourists, shops, transport, etc, say the same thing. Tourism is way, way down. They are not really counting the influx of Chinese tourists, as they are of little benefit to most of these operators. Tourists from all over the world are abandoning Thailand in droves. It is not just the world economy, though that is a factor. It is the ignorant statements, the inflammatory rhetoric, the extreme nationalism, the policies that are unfriendly to both tourists and ex-pats, the LM cases, the increase in crime, the courts which are bought and paid for, the lack of effective police work, the traffic safety issues, the junta, and the general nonsense. What Thailand needs to start coming to terms with, is that they need the world, a whole helluva lot more than the world needs them. The sooner they acknowledge that, the sooner they can start doing what they need to do, to really start repairing the immense damage they have done in the past two years to their precious tourism industry. It's good to see that Thailand is finally embracing recycling. This is the same strategy they proposed in 1996...and we see how well that worked. Pib
...the government has set a 20-year strategy for tourism under which natural resources will be restored and local villagers will be taken care of. This 20 year strategy sounds like "I Wish Upon a Star" Strategy. The govt must have copied it from a fairy tale book. But I hope the fairy tale comes true. Valentine
If they could actually recycle some of the money back to the villages which a select few are making out of the Chinese hordes then that would be a good first step. It would be interesting to know just where that money goes. Much of it will be funneled back to China but what about the profits of the select few? Squeegee
Ouch, does this mean the junta and son of junta will be around until then to make sure it's all going to ' plan '. My thoughts exactly. Most toy soldiers are long forgotten after 20 years, especially the plastic ones. One of their daftest assumptions is that they can tear up other people's work without realizing the same can be done to theirs. As such all their drafts are: : a version of something (such as a document) that you make before you make the final version : a system in which young people are required to join the armed forces of a country for a period of service : cool air moving in a closed space http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/draft Lucky for them at the current time multiple choice in Thailand always results in a pass. The past is still with us, as the junta is proof of. Nothing has changed significantly under this junta, just the snouts at the trough. Yet there still are a few TVF members who still harp on endlessly about Thaksin this and Thaksin that - just like the junta wants Thais to do. Alwyn
I thought the idea of this "government" was to erase corruption and allow another elected government to take over (and then repeat the process from 2014 till then every 5 years or so). Why are they faffing about with stuff like this when the next and real government might just kaibosh it anyway?
oneday
Amazing how a short term and temporary government (555) feels they have the right to set long term goals and start long term projects, spending billions and billions of baht for the future Democratic (555) government. It would be interesting to know just where that money goes. Much of it will be funneled back to China but what about the profits of the select few? I read an article a few weeks back (sorry, I don't have a link). It reported on some trends in tourism that are relevant to Thailand. 1) Thailand has been trending toward more package tours 2) When comparing the money spent on package tours and by independent travelers, a higher percent of the package tour spending goes back to the country of origin. The strategic implication is obvious; if a country relies too much on package tours, their tourism revenue will be adversely affected. I wonder if TAT knows this? CantSpell
Did they find a name for that 20 years strategy already? Maybe I could help: "Utopia" could be a nice one of "Pandemonium" could also fit... 20 years plan, this country would improve so fast if they could use the energy they spend doing stupid statements to actually do something... chainarong
One could be forgiven to think that the Junta is in for the long haul with a twenty year strategy , other indications are recruiting 300,000 more conscripts to keep the students at bay and more vigorous control of the internet and mobile metadata to stop anyone ( Students ) sending messages in code, the only saviour is what this guy says you can take with a pinch of salt................................................ wabothai
In my opinion there is nobody controlling or checking on the TAT folks. Madame can't be touched because she is the wife of a general. Every penny spent on them is a waste. 20 year plan during a .....(can't say) is more of a total waste. Operation clean sweep is the only answer to save what is left of real tourism.
