My current tourist visa (yes, I have had many) is about to expire on the 23rd. I plan on applying for an extension tomorrow, but on the 26th I'm flying to Malaysia and then to Japan, where I'll be traveling for 8 days, then back to Malaysia, and then will fly from KL to Bangkok on Feb 5. I have already purchased a roundtrip ticket from BKk to the US and back to Thailand, which I'll be doing beginning March 4. However, I'm still worried that I could have troubles at immigration when I fly back into Don Muang on Feb 5. I suppose I could apply for a re-entry permit, but because I'm not leaving Thailand again until March 4, I'm thinking that I'll try and just get a 30-day stamp when I fly in. Will I likely be allowed 30-day stamp at Don Muang?

  • If you've had many tourist visas and this would be your first visa exempt entry you won't have any problem.

If you have had many visa exempt entries you should still be allowed another when flying in on Feb 5th, but might face questioning about what you do when in Thailand. Having an onward flight back to the US should mean you'll have no problem. Make sure you have at least 10k baht in cash which is a requirement for visa exempt entry.

When you say "my current visa" we would assume perhaps a tourist visit and not an exempt stamp. Even with stamps your not doing very brief in/out.

You would not have any problems obtaining visa exempt stamp. Have your ticket out los available as airline may want to see it. The experts will give you definitive advice.

You will have no problem doing an entry when you return from your trip.

Since your flight out is within 30 days you also have no problem boarding you flight either.

is their a maximum number of free 30 days thai immigration gives out in a given year?

There is no rule that limits the number of entries or the number of days for visa exempt entries.

Only at 4 Cambodian land borders.

Although there is no actual limit elsewhere you can be denied entry with too many (unknown number) back to back visa exempt entries if they consider you're a "visa runner". Also the immigration computer system flags people with 6 or more visa exempt entries and if flagged the IO may question you about what you do in Thailand. Anyone suspected of working may be denied entry.
