Panthongtae and associates ask for postponement of money laundering case



BANGKOK: Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s only son, Panthongtae Shinawatra, and four co-suspects slapped with money laundering charges have postponed their appointments with officials of the Department of Special Investigation scheduled for Friday.

Pol Lt-Col Somboon Sarasith, commander of the DSI’s special criminal cases, said he received a notice from representatives of Panthongtae, Mrs Kanchanapa Honghern, Mr Wanchai Honghern and Mrs Kaeseenee Jipipob asking for postponement of their meetings to testify on the case.

The fifth suspect, Mr Manop Dhivaree, also sent a lawyer to ask for postponement of the enquiry session with DSI officials.

Pol Lt-Col Somboon said Manop asked to postpone the appointment until mid-February but the other four suspects said they would have to consult their lawyers first about when they are ready to show up.

The case concerns the state-owned Krung Thai Bank which extended a huge loan to Krisda Mahanakorn group and some of the loan was reported to have been channeled into the accounts if the five suspects. The incident took place during 2003-2004 when Thaksin was prime minister.

Do your job, go out and arrest them for not turning up.

They are the accused and do not get to choose when they face up to the consequences of their greed and corrupt schemes.

Or not of course if they are "cleared".

The event is around 12-13 years ago now. What IS the Statute of limitations? Surely they do not have to spin it out for too much longer before they pass "GO" & get to keep the money?

How do you give instructions to fight corruption & alleged Hiso crime when people just refuse to appear because they want to delay proceedings? They have had 12 years to consult their lawyers. Why has it taken so long anyway, well since May 2014 at least. Before then we understand was a whole different ballgame.

If he think he is innocent why not go to clarify this accusation quickly with DSI ?

Plus, it's not like this matter is new, it's been in the news several times with lots of details over a number of years, and the people involved and their lawyers have known for years the case could easily go forward at any time.

If the people involved had not already checked where they stand on this over those years then they are fools, but of course perhaps they just automatically laugh and believe they are untouchable. Hopefully, if they are guilty of an offences(s) they will get full punishment.

If the lawyers hadn't already checked the documents / facts / evidence involved and hadn't put a shell of ideas together then they are incapable and fools. I somewhat doubt donut boxes will help.

It has taken so long to consult with his lawyers because for the most part of those 12 years the country was run by his corrupt father and puppet aunt so he had nothing to worry about.

Exactly so why don't they reform the justice system, something that is even more critical than police reform, oh wait they cannot because they are the ones they are beholden to to do their bidding in getting rid of their opponents.

I am honestly starting to think that there is money flowing into pockets that up to now I believed would never happen, I used to think anyone in Thailand could be bought but had some faith in Prayuth Chan (O) Cha to have honor and closed pockets......now I am not so sure, is he going to go into the anals of Thai history as just another corrupt individual that failed to serve the people with honesty and integrity ?

Exactly so why don't they reform the justice system, something that is even more critical than police reform, oh wait they cannot because they are the ones they are beholden to to do their bidding in getting rid of their opponents.

They can reform the justice system - but very unlikely to do that in a way that provides a fair, impartial, law applied and enforced equally to all, justice for all and open system. That would be about as far away from the current system as you can get.

More likely a few reforms to "strengthen" the existing system and prevent change.

True, but sending a lawyer on the day itself to ask for postponement suggests on-purpose delay of procedures. What if the police had said 'no' which I think is their right to do.
