Health-related NGOs complain against back taxes payment and fund delay

BANGKOK: Over 200 staff members of non-governmental organizations relying on funding from Thai Health Promotion Foundation rallied at the ThaiHealth Office on Friday to voice their grievances over funding delay and five-year back taxes demanded by the Revenue Department.

The group submitted a petition to ThaiHealth board chairman Admiral Narong Pipatthanasai who is also deputy prime minister explaining their hardships from the delay in the disbursement of funding to their organizations and the prospect of having to pay 800 million baht in back taxes from Revenue Department.

The group leader, Mr Kamron Chudecha, told the media that about 15,000 people working for the NGOs depending on funding from ThaiHeath have been affected by the funding delay and they have no idea whether they will be able to resume work as normal.

Kamron said their NGOs wanted a clear-cut explanation whether they have to pay the Revenue Department in retroactive taxes and fines estimated at about 800 million baht claiming that they are all non-profitable organizations and working for the betterment of the public.

As for the seven ThaiHealth board members who are to be chosen, he said that the civil society was afraid of outside interference in the selection process which could go against the principle of ThaiHealth.

OR possibly it's been shown to be a bit of a gentleman's club. I abstain from voting my NGO money but I will be sure to vote your NGO money when the time comes, wink wink nudge nudge!

An NGO (non governmental organization), that is supposedly a Non-Profit Organization is arguing about taxes.

I could speak for hours on end about the irony of this.

Nobody would listen though.
