Govt: Artisanal fishermen can operate as usual

BANGKOK, 25 January 2016 (NNT) - Spokesman of the Command Center for Combatting Illegal Fishing Vice Admiral Chumphol Lumphikanont has stressed that artisanal fishing is allowed to operate as usual.

The spokesman on Sunday said artisanal fishermen were not prohibited from operating since Section 34 of the Emergency Decree Governing Fisheries, B.E.2558, was not effective yet. The government had to set up provincial fishing committees and talk with local artisanal fishermen before demarcating fishing areas, the spokesman said.

A network of artisanal fishermen in Prachuap Khiri Khan submitted a letter to the government earlier this month, asking that the government revoke Section 34 of the Emergency Decree Governing Fisheries. They said the law affected artisanal fishermen by limiting their fishing area to only three nautical miles.
