At the heart of the fractious politics is rivalry between the Bangkok-based royalist-military establishment and populist former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his allies, who the establishment sees as a threat.

this isn't really about Thaksin and his fight with the other elites. That is a side-show. This is about the sovereignty of the Thai people.

Actually it is about protecting the elite, in particular a stratum of Thai society that we cannot mention, through and immediately after an event we cannot discuss, and on to the future hierarchy which will include or not include people we cannot talk about. Plus the livelihoods of all their sycophants and beneficiaries.

Is that clear enough?

"I promise that in July 2017 there will definitely be an election."

does it need to be pointed out that he also said,

- there will be no coup

- I don't want to be PM

- elections in September 2015

He is making it up as he goes along... Just pure BS.

He is only following orders and breaking promises as he goes along. However this July 2017 election may be the real deal. It just show that the elites intolerance threshold have been reached and their pockets are hurting. They now willing to abandon their reform attempts to save their skins or their wealth even at the expense of risking into an unknown sphere if the charter is voted out which I think will happen. Well unless the junta has something up their sleeves to ensure the charter sail through like the did in 2007.

well, Eric, this guy has proven that he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but on the other hand, you don't reach the pinnacle of Thailand's most powerful mafia single largest organization without having plans, so I believe him when he says that he has a plan, or at least a plan for additional bluster...

Look at it this way, one of the objectives of the coup was to install a fake democracy that the military and their elite allies could control, and control it more completely than their own 2007 constitution allowed. This time they are barely trying to disguise it which is why the first draft and the draft coming on Friday are such giant turds. This is a throw-back to the 1980's or even earlier...

So for sure they will roll out the turd and they will send this version for a referendum. Even more so than in 2007, expect to see massive manipulation of the media, oppression of all opposition to the charter, and lots of nationalistic propaganda. It is very likely that the good general will not need his back up plan given the possibilities to force through a yes vote on the referendum. After all, the interim constitution will still be in force during the referendum. whistling.gif

But should it fail, the self-appointed "PM" has all the power he needs to just install any version of a constitution that he chooses - the first draft, the second draft, a combination of the two, a hastily re-drafted version that doesn't go to a referendum, but which allows for fake-elections and with the "promise" of a new charter by the new "government", etc, etc, ...

He has lots of choices.

I believe that the only pressure the PTB feel at the moment is to put in place their fake veneer of "Thai-style" democracy in order to slow the criticism of the international community and to reassure international corporations. Both of which will be appeased and satisfied with a skin-deep democracy.
