flightofancy Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Hello I am visiting Thailand from the UK. And I would like to arrange an ENT consultation and operation in Bangkok. I need a tonsillectomy. So I would like to get a quote from here and book something in while I am in Thailand. I only need 1-2 nights in hospital because I will be staying with friends who can take care of me. First, can anyone recommend a good ENT surgeon? And how long do you have to wait to see them, and then how long is the wait to have the operation? I ask this because i"ve not booked my flights yet - due out about 18 Feb... and not sure if I will need to book 3 weeks or a 4 week stay. Thank you
lopburi3 Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 At private hospital there would be little or no wait for an operation (you pay for service and receive it). Also most doctors have little or no waiting - but prior to any operation will be a general exam (which if all OK will only take an hour or so). Can not advise on operation or doctor as have only had a thyroid removal myself - and believe that was two or three days in hospital. 1
Sheryl Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Suggest this doctor at Saint Louis Hospital: Assoc. Prof. Songklot Aeumjaturapat http://www.saintlouis.or.th/index.php/component/doctor/index.php?option=com_doctor&task=searchEn He is there on Sundays 8:340 AM - 4 PM and Thursday 3:30 - 7:30 PM He is also at Bangkok Hospital Saturdays from 9 Am - 1 Pm but that is a much more expensive hospital, procedure would cost as much as 50% more there. St Louis is a non-profit and about as inexpensive as a private hospital in Thailand can get (and quality is absolutely fine - though amenities less like a hotel and more like a hospital; no big fancy lobby etc). You can get an estimate of cost by email from the hospital but they will not schedule the procedure until/unless you have been seen by a doctor and he has recommended it. Assuming he agrees the procedure is indicated, if you see him on a Sunday then I expect the surgery could be done within that week. The cost estimate you get will probably assume 3 nights in hospital so if discharged sooner (which will depend on your condition) will be a little less but not by much - the room charge is not a lot, the main cost is the surgery itself. The estimate might also assume a "VIP" room which if you opt against will likewise lower the cost a bit. In all Thai hospitals they have a wide range of patient rooms at different prices, when you check in you will go the Admissions Dept where they have a book listing the rooms and prices. They will often show you only the higher priced ones at first so may have to insist on seeing less expensive options. Also, all the hospitals tend to estimate a bit high as they have found people get upset when costs run higher than they expected whereas no one complains when actual price is less. [email protected] Obviously, bring all medial records with you 2
flightofancy Posted February 20, 2016 Author Posted February 20, 2016 Thank you Sheryl for the detailed and helpful reply. I did try emailing them but no reply. I have arrived in Bangkok and plan to go to his clinic tomorrow morning so I'll report back on progress.
flightofancy Posted February 22, 2016 Author Posted February 22, 2016 Hi For your information,.. just to confirm I went to St Louis yesterday and saw Dr Songklot. The hospital quoted 90,000B for the operation - to include staying over the night before, and then removing the tonsils as day surgery. I also got a quote from Bangkok 9 hospital for 65,000B. I have an appointment at the King's hospital on Wednesday - which quotes between 60,000 + 80,000 plus cost of the room.

I contacted St.Louis hospital and was quoted about 90k- 130k baht depanding on the type of anesthesia. I would like to know if you end up doing at the same hospital or a different one. Could you pls tell me about your complete experience such as pain management, hospital stay, doctor's name and price? Thank you so much and hope to hear from you soon.
