Getting a visa exemption at Mae Sai

Featured Replies

I am currently living in Chiangmai on a tourist visa extension from the local immigration office. This expires on 1st February and I wish to travel to Mae Sai to obtain a 15 day visa exemption (non-G7 passport). Then I intend to extend this for 30 days at the immigration office, leaving the country in mid-March.

Has anyone with these or similar circumstances done this visa run recently with success? I haven't been able to find any definite answers online or from local travel agents. Some have suggested contacting the immigration office, do they deal with queries about border crossings? I would have thought they only deal with queries about visa processing at the office. Thanks in advance for any help....

Hi Sunnyjim5,

I have read the post on the link you gave. This is not my situation, that poster was already on a visa exemption and wanting to get another exemption. I am currently on a tourist visa extension and want to get a visa exemption at Mae Sai. I do not have any visa exemptions in my passport.

The point being is that you do not have a visa which allows you to reenter the country.

You will not be allowed to leave and you will not be given a visa exempt entry.

If you believe otherwise then you could try.

You can go to Hauy Xie in Laos , opposite Chiang Kong and get a Visa Exempt Stamp .

They wont let you do it at Maesai
