Advice on welding sought.

Featured Replies

To start with, I have never welded in my life.

Now I want to weld 2 steel door hinges of the type pictured below.

To get a tradesman with a welding machine here to do it for me, probably sets me back 1000 baht. Yes I'm in Pattaya, not upcountry.

So I had a look at Shopee and see that you already can have a welding machine for 750 baht, after discount voucher probably about 500 baht or even less

I assume that thingy will do the job for 2 hinges, and if it dies straight after, I still save 500 baht compared to get a tradesman.

So as a noob, will I be able to weld those 2 hinges with what is available on Shopee for 700 baht?

Please advise a cheap machine that will do the job, as I understand there are MIF/TIG/MMA and more types. Some need argon, so they are out of the question, others use flux-core wire and others a rod.

If you please could link to one under 1000 baht on Shopee as that is the easiest for me to order.

Thanks in advance

You can do it, though you’ll need to read up on it and getting familiar with what type of welder you want to use and what sticks that are applicable for what steel. It will be messy until you get the hang of it. Easier and cheaper to get someone else to do it for you, unless you plan on using it for more projects in the future. In any case, you’ll definitely want to practice on some scrap first.

The project is 2 hinges as in the picture, to be welded on 3.2 (3.5?) mm roof steel.

Please advise what welder and what sticks I would need.

I have no plans for future projects, but you never know, and if I have the welding machine anyway, it will only be extra savings.

This is what you want to use with e6013 rods.

Again, practice on scrap first until you are confident at your skill level, and wear eye protection.

Make sure all those accessories shown come with the welder.

Sometimes they don't, you may just get the welder and 5 rods.

As others have said practise first.

U tube has welding vids that will help.

First up, drive a few km out of Pattaya, find a small welding shop and ask how much, probably a 10 / 15 minute job and should cost you 2/ 300 Bht.

A shop a few km out of pattaya will charge probably more, as they have to travel further to do the job.

just pay whatever the cost. I'm a proud owner of a stick welder and I burn holes everywhere.

If you want to weld spend money on a Mig welder.

@CallumWK No wonder there are so many complaints about Shopee.

You need to check the options before purchase.

In the first link the machine is 2,399 Baht. ALL the other prices are in ALL links for accessories not a welding machines.

If you need a hobby take up welding.

In Germany training/experience to be a recognised welder takes 2 1/2 to 3 years.

It is not as easy as soldering, although in fairness with the advent of MIG self feeding machines it has gotten easier.

Just get a guy to come and do it. Any place that builds gates will do it.

1000 baht? Travel time, set up time, fuel and truck payment cost, profit. The actual cost of the welds in immaterial.

If you can take the job to their shop it will be dirt cheap.

We got a complaint that we charged more than 200 baht for 2 guys in a truck to be on site for 1 hour. The Expressway tolls were more than that and it took 1hour each way.

I have no intention to ever be a recognised welder, I just want to weld 2 hinges and be done with it

You want to go thru all this hassle to weld 2 hinges, which any small local shop with a welder can do in 5 minutes and a few hundred baht.

A famous saying from Forrest Gump comes to mind.

Nope not a few hundred baht, maybe try to read the OP

The title of the OP was "advice sought", some have already pointed out that it can be done, and additionally I will have a welder if I ever should need it again.

Others have advised against it, so at the end I will make a decision based on the info posted here

My point was; it is not as easy as you think which is why experience is required.

But please go ahead and buy a machine and do some practise welds before the hinges.

Will the hinges require vertical welding if so you'll need to practise that as well.

Of course if you simply need to melt some welding rod on or near the hinges which looks like a bird has shat on it without blowing a hole in your 1/8in roof metal Please let us know how you got on.

The hinges will be welded on a loft entrance, similar to the picture below.

In fact the door is already installed with 2 hinges, I just want to add 2 more for extra safety. Should actually as easy as lay the hinges on the frame and weld at both ends.

Aluminium ladder ........ you won't be welding to that!

I said an entrance similar to the picture below, so not my entrance door, and I can clearly see that the hinges in that picture aren't welded on the ladder

How much were the hinges? You'll want at least one set of spares. Add that to the investment cost.

As most everyone else says, you'll want to practice. Spot welding with rods is always entertaining.

@VocalNeal said it perfectly "Of course if you simply need to melt some welding rod on or near the hinges which looks like a bird has shat on it without blowing a hole in your 1/8in roof metal" ..

I'll add to his "Please let us know how you got on"!

" To get a tradesman with a welding machine here to do it for me, probably sets me back 1000 baht. Yes I'm in Pattaya, not upcountry. "

Did you ask welders for a quote?

Op, if you have never done any welding before

just pay a guy to do the job.

unless you just want to play,

You will spend a day or two learning how to do a basic job.

with loads of F-words, C-words and a few burns. to go with it all.

and maybe a small fire to deal with. giggle

The cheap welders will do the job fine. with 2mm rods

Good luck.

I needed 2 hinges welded as mine had cracked. My ole lady saw a Thai guy welding in his drive. The old guy pulled up in his MB with salang. Did the job, 500 baht.

That’s a stick welder, IMO you would be better off with a TIG or MIG.

1) Properly preparing what you are welding is key to a good weld.

2) You need to practice, or you will end up with poor penetration and popcorn welds.

3) There are many YouTube videos available on this topic.

4) Wear a long sleeve and long pants.

The OP has no experience with welding, mma type using 2.0mm 2.5mm stick @~40-90amp is good for a beginner. If he decides to further his experience then he can get a mig/tig as the mma is cheap enough investment for learning.

Be sure to post pictures of the welds when you are done.

I did a job over the winter and bought a welder and cutting off saw just for the job. The welder I got from lazada for 583 baht and would do what you want. I came with a box of rods and a very crude hand held mask, I bought a better one.

I doubt I will use it again so if interested send a PM, I am about 45 mins from Pattaya.

BTW it was the first time I had ever welded, bit of a learning curve.

Haven't you got any neighbours? I can think of three guys that do welding that all live within 100 metres of me. They would probably all do it for a bottle of Sang Som.
