Thailand plans to sell 300,000 of rice to Iran

BANGKOK, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Thailand plans to sell 300,000 tonnes of rice to Iran, the Thai Rice Exporters Association said on Wednesday, ahead of a visit to the Middle East to negotiate a deal.

Chookiat Opaswong, honorary president of the association, said the sale to Iran was not a part of Thailand's 9 million tonnes export target for 2016, but that it was a "bonus".

A delegation from the association and commerce ministry will visit Iran next week to negotiate the deal, he said, adding that the rice would come from new stocks.

I have 17 million tons of 2011 rice stored in warehouses that I'll sell cheap. Or, is it missing? I can't remember anything these days...

Plastic rice?

Plastic rice?

Best place to get "new stocks" of rice in a drought, when the farmers have been told to NOT grow a 2nd crop this year, and have switched over to growing watermelons (in a drought).

So does Iran plan to buy 300,000 tonnes of Thai rice?

Shhhh....nobody has told then yet.

;-)

They haven't actually sold anything to Iran ? I hope the Iranians know what theyre getting into.

Thai rice at the moment is pretty awful. It goes off in less than 24 hours and turns to slops. It used to be re cookable for 2 even 3 days.

Nowdays you cook it and eat everything or throw the surplus out.

Iranian's arent stupid. They'll pay a pittance for it - if anything.

One thing is for sure , the Thai gov wont tell the public what price they got.

The answer from Iran may take some time. They have to agree on the decision if they want rotten rice, the pest infected rice, plastic rice or the amazing multi mix?

Maybe Iran has offered to barter its now surplus uranium centrifuges for the rice, perhaps valuing the rice at higher than market price to give the Prayut government a PR boost.

But on a more serious note:

The 9 million tons export target for 2016 was part of the Prayut's government to reduce by about 28% rice production for 2016/17 in an effort to force an increase in market prices (2016-01-08). The admittely unexpected sale of rice to Iran is likely to be made at current market prices that will only reaffirm no price increase. Prayut would do better to negotiate sale of high value finished products and parts such as electronics and autos.

they were giving free rice away at garages last week... i refuse to eat it as its either sprayed with chemicals to prevent further turning to dust, probably already 3-4 years old.
The rice scheme was Taksins biggest hit back at Thailand, they made billions and cost the country billions in debt...

Note to self: Iranian cuisine ruined by Thai rice. Avoid! coffee1.gif

Plastic rice?

How dare you?

It's not plastic rice ... merely a new blend from Nakhon Nayok.

Aroi mak!!!
