Laos Tourist Visa

Featured Replies

The two times I have obtained my tourist Visa for Laos at border control they have jumped a page in my passport and placed the sticker on the right-hand page, leaving a blank page on the left. This is annoying as I am using up my pages quickly now.

Is it a requirement to have the visa on the right-hand page or should I tell them to make sure to stick it on the left this time? Has anyone got the sticker on the left?

They can and will put it wherever they choose to.

can always go back and fill in the gaps, did they not put the entry stamp opposite.

Sadly not. They left a page blank, visa on the right, then jumped to next page for stamps. Thai visa again on right. Four pages used!!

Peel the visa off and stick in on the other page

An interesting observation ! I have just checked an old passport and all the visa stickers are placed on the right!

However, the left hand pages are full of exit/entry stamps.

In most countries, this would be considering tampering with a government document, which in the US, is a felony offense. As to skipping pages, it shouldn't matter...as the passport fills-up immigration officers will go through and fill-up any available pages/spaces.

Lol. There's a thought. Although the rubber stamp covers the actual page too,so difficult. And now is not the time to fiddle around with passport entries methinks.

I thought maybe they have an electronic reader which picks up visa stickers on the right-hand side.

Quite.

If they can fill in the gaps I should be alright.

Thanks.

They can fill in the gaps. Actually, if you insist, just tell the officer at passport control to stamp a specific page in your passport. I've done it many times with no issues and they almost always comply, especially if you give a good reason.

On the other hand, since you can't see who issues you with a visa, you also can't control where they'll put it. However, I've noticed that there is a worldwide trend towards placing a visa on the right hand page of a passport, though not always. Cambodia and Laos are rather inconsistent here, especially at visa-on-arrival ports.

It doesn't matter which page the visa is on as immigration will look through your passport to locate places to put your entry and exit stamp.

Example. When I first came to Thailand the immigration officer at the airport skipped a page when he stamped my visa exempt. When my passport was finally full and I went to immigration for an extension of stay they just looked through my passport and found the first visa page empty and stamped it there.

Don't worry about it to much.

I feel like this is not strictly necesary to clarify, but just incase... Please don't do this.

I agree. Besides making a mess of the page(s) and doing something possibly illegal in your home country, you will invite suspicion every time you cross a border, because the IO will see your passport has been tampered with.

Just asking for trouble.

On my last entry to Laos they skipped a page, but the Thai Consulate put my multi "O" on the skipped page.

Come to Nakhon Phanom! Just checked my passport and I have 4 Laos visa stamps on the left and only one on the right. But as others have said dont worry, any missed pages will be filled with entry/exit stamps. What pisses me off is if they stamp these carelessly and you dont get 8 stamps on a page. Most immigration officers are quite careful about this. The exception to this were 2 females at Swampy...Could have been the same one. When running out of room in my last passport I used to point to where there were odd spaces and ask I.Os to fill them. Most understood whIy I was asking and obliged except the one cantankerous b**** who refused because there would be a slight overlap of stamps....this despite my pointing out there were already numerous slightly overlapping stamps in my passport. Luckily another officer filled the space without question on my next entry/exit thus leaving room for one more full page visa stamp.

I dont see why the visa stamps should take up a whole page. It is only a wasteful convention. I think there should be an international campaign/petition to get them changed to half a page....but most people dont travel enough to care..

Don't do that could damage the passport, and then thats a worse mess to sort.

as the passport gets filled the empty pages can be used.

Here is the solution. When one page is full of stamps I simply peel off that post it sticker from the next page. It works ;)

you are so smart !?

Just looked at my new passport, 1 on the left, 2 on the right

extension stamps all over the place, i now get thicker

passports. Old passport 7 stickers on the right.

Look like the electronic information at the bottom of visa stickers need to be on the same side as the passport ID page code.

I looked at a friend passport and some odd countries still use big stamp for visa ( no stickers ) and they can put anywhere as there are not readable by machine.
