Sam Kong underpass complaints leads to visit from Office of Ombudsman

Ombudsman Mr Boon Tapanadul inspects the Sam Kong underpass construction sight.

PHUKET: -- An official from the Office of Ombudsman Thailand made a visit to Phuket today (Jan 28) to investigate the delays into the construction of the Sam Kong underpass. His visit was due to complaints received from residents about the time taken to complete the project.

Ombudsman Mr Boon Tapanadul, Secretary-general Raksagecha Chaechai and members of their team were led to the construction area by Phuket Highways Office Director Samak Lueduanghad.

Mr Tapanadul said, The reason for our visit today is because we have received many complaints from local residents that the underpass project in Sam Kong is taking too long and the completion being pushed back on numerous occasions.

We were told that the project started in 2013 and was scheduled to be complete last June, but as of today the tunnel does not even see daylight.

Mr Tapanadul went on to say that he could see that construction work is still going on and that some areas of the road still have potholes.

Road conditions are a major concern for travellers here because they can cause accidents, traffic congestion and damage the tourism image, he said.

Traffic makes it hard for thai labourers to work on a closed site

There's a 2 million baht fine per day effective. They could hire 5000 (five thousand) construction workers for that money and get it done in no time. Yet you see just a handful of workers doing a tiny bit here and there and during many times there's no work at all going on.

Clearly the company is not interested in finishing the project as quickly as possible so I wonder what game they are playing. Stall as long as possible to transfer the funds to some secure place and then shut down?

Contrast this with the work being done by Italian Thai which have an armada of workers working pretty much all day on the intersection at the end of bypass road and they finished the one at Central quite some time ago.

If I was the government, I'd kick that slow company out and let Italian Thai finish the job.

this morning they decided to bring the cameras and hire a bunch of fake workers to seem busy

Also going south, theres a large part of the road that fell right next to the tunnel

Policemen were also there to make traffic

It just gets worse for them. The road sank last night causing mayhem.

What a nightmare.

That's another excuse for not meeting the ever-extending deadline.

Good thing there's no traffic being allowed on this slipshod ( to be polite) construction.

They should sack this company and get italthai to finish the job. Its obvious this company is out of it's depth.

You were allowed to drive on that part, except nobody did. It didnt look very solid.

Corruption and incompetence all buried in a tunnel, how convenient.

Or better yet, implement a public transport system including light rail, TWENTYFIRST CENTURY bus service (how can Penang do it but Phuket cannot:? No need to answer that one), and get at least some of those people out of their cars. The more roads are built, traffic expands exponentially. Fact.
