BANGKOK: -- In an effort to prevent wild fires and smog that happened every year in the dry season, Thailand and Myanmar have agreed to increase cooperation in tackling the problem.

The agreement was reached after yesterday’s meeting in Mae Hong Son province.

Both countries aimed to decrease forest fires and smog by 40% this year.

According to the National News Bureau of Thailand, a group of Thai military, police, administrative officers as well as local people met with their Mynmar counterparts in a border zone in Mae Hong Son yesterday.

At the meeting, the Thai side asked the Myanmar military officers to urge Myanmar people living along the Thai-Myanmar borders to stop burning forests and mobile plantations in order to prevent smog during the dry season.

Thai firefighters also demonstrated how to fight forest fires and construct fire breaks for Myanmar people.

A Myanmar army official who came to meet with the Thai authorities said Myanmar was ready to work with Thailand in controlling forest fires and burning by both Thai and Myanmar people along the borders, according to NNT.

Had a massive fire right across the road from us. Nobody did anything...even after calls to the fire department. Somebody was clearing out the brush for a new construction site.

" So it's agreed then, we share whatever ' proceeds ' we make out of this ! "

It's rubbish! In Chiang Mai province all the police have to do is go to the source of the smoke and ask "who burn here? Off to jail. (Never going to happen is it?).

Rotf. I drove past a tree nursery here in Chiang Mai this morning, right beside a major highway, and they were merrily burning piles of leaves. Ain't no chance of anything happening to improve the situation. Just a group of self satisfied military big wigs who are interested in getting some nice handshake pictures for the family album.

So it must nearly be March, the Government is pretending to do something about burning season again :D
