Thung Song Hong police chief denies he put pressure on the officer who committed suicide

BANGKOK: -- Thung Song Hong police superintendent denied that he put heavy pressure on one of his subordinates handling a case regarding 204 cars seized from a shopping mall’s parking lot forcing the latter to commit suicide.

Pol Col Termphao Siriphubaan said that he himself and the officer who committed suicide, Pol Cpt Thawee Moenrak, were sued by a finance company which owns the cars seized from its customers who defaulted on instalment payments.

He explained that the finance company whose name was not mentioned and the car buyers have the right to claim back the seized vehicles from the police and the company has wanted to settle the outstanding instalments with its customers rather than suing them in the court.

The embattled superintendent said he had not seen the victim for five days before the latter committed suicide last week at a lodging in the compound of Thung Song Hong police station and, therefore, it was not possible for him to put pressure on the victim.

He disclosed that one day ahead of the suicide, an enquiry officer investigating a two million baht fraud case transferred the case to Pol Cpt Thawee’s responsibility. Also, he claimed that the police captain had a quarrel with his wife.

He dismissed the accusation that he didn’t take good care of his men claiming that he donated 20,000 baht from his own bank account to help arrange for the victim’s body to be sent back home in Phatthalung province for funeral.

“I would like to ask don’t I take good care of my men,” said the embattled superintendent.

He went on saying that he is ready to clear all the allegations against him.

204 cars seized from a shopping mall’s parking lot? Anybody have any further info on this?

The Nation story adds some, but doesn't explain why the seizure took place.

Yes it's hard to follow.

Were the BIB acting as repo men ?

If officially is it the job of the police and if unofficially we can guess why ?

"He explained that the finance company whose name was not mentioned and the car buyers have the right to claim back the seized vehicles from the police and the company has wanted to settle the outstanding instalments with its customers rather than suing them in the court."

That's an explanation?

Only if you're Edward Lear...

... Or Timothy O'Leary.

It seems to me the "owners" have stopped paying the installments on the cars, leading to dispute over who should gain possession on release by BIB. But what would inspire them to grab 200+ cars from a mall parking lot?

The enigma, that is Thailand.! But anything that is suspect. Always concerns money.

...and why were 204 different defaulted car owners parking their cars at the same place at the same time? Did they form a Defaulted Car Owners Club and have a rally? Looks to me that the good captain bit off more than he could chew...

My guess would be that this occurred over a period of time. Perhaps the police were supplied with a list of vehicles from the finance companies and the mall parking lots were easy pickings to find the cars. Purely an assumption on my part.

is this a chinese enclave?
