BMA prepares to cope with drought



Bangkok, 2 February 2016 (NNT) – Bangkok authorities have begun drafting measures to deal with water shortages in the capital’s central and southern regions.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Deputy Permanent Secretary, Chakkaphan Piew-ngam, recently called a meeting to prepare authorities to deal with a drought situation in the capital’s central and southern areas.

The meeting was held between BMA offices and district offices and focused on updating all involved on the current situation and forecasts of the drought’s development. The meeting also drafted response measures to aid citizens.

The deputy permanent secretary stated that water shortages in Bangkok affect residents in 6 main ways; impeding farming, impeding daily life, causing subsidence, allowing for brush fires, allowing for water reserves to be contaminated and allowing for associated diseases.

Relevant district offices have been tasked with anticipating the severity of the drought in their area and drafting appropriate plans, which are to be submitted to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation this week. They have all been empowered to enact their response measures immediately.

This may be a case of "too little, too late".

It seems like Songkran is the "Elephant in the Room".....they are counting on rains in May which doesn't always happen. They really need to address the water usage for Songkran....at the very least they should make the use of ice illegal.

Well they done a good job stopping the flooding..................didn't they ?.

If these are the same guys who "cope" with the annual flood, we know the outcome already.

Actually if you read an article form a few days ago you will see that those peasants take 80% of the water 10% for industry and 10% for consumers.

Anyone who thinks watering crops is more important as drinking water and water in the city is crazy so yes sod the peasants. But give everyone in Thailand their drinking water just not for the rice crop and there will be plenty water to go around.

I was amazed by the figures.. i knew farmers used a lot more water but never knew it was that much (there were figures in Ayuttaya.
