BANGKOK, 11 February 2016 (NNT) – Justice Minister Gen Paiboon Khumchaya has presided over the ceremony to hand out seed money at the Office of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB).

Seed money was handed to a drug withdrawal club as well as 65 former addicts who have successfully completed the ONCB’s drug rehabilitation program.

In attendance were Justice Vice Minister Gen Nivat Meenayotin and ONCB Secretary-General Narong Rattananukul. Other agencies represented at the ceremony include the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Department of Probation, Royal Thai Police, and the Ministries of Interior, Labor, and Public Health.

The project is one of the government’s efforts to reduce crime and the number of drug addicts. Those taking the drug withdrawal program were taught job skills and received monetary aid.

In 2015, over 23,000 rehabilitation participants registered for government aid, of which nearly 11,700 have received seed money.

Hm- on a first sight I read "weed money"

I'm sure handing out cash to recovering drug addicts will go well.

While common sense suggests finding a deterrent these rocket scientists offer a reward.

While common sense suggests finding a deterrent these rocket scientists offer a reward.

It has been proven in most countries that deterrents actually don't work very well. I actually think they are taking a good approach.

They are in a rehabilitation program, so they are trying actively to stop their habits. They aren't rewarding the rejects. They are rewarding those actively trying to improve themselves.

This will cause a lot of resentment from those who did not do anything wrong but cannot get access to seed money like these people. They will say, with a lot of resentment behind their breath "Oh! How fortunate they are! Here we are, clean as a whistle and we can't get money like they did. Perhaps, we should also become drug addicts, go through rehab and avail of that seed money ourselves?" Why do I say this? Because we had a project very similar to this (albeit a different type of problem).

One doubts that these rehab programs are easy and still tough times ahead for them. So good luck to them and I hope they make a go of it and can stay clean.

Seed money is a good idea: they could kick start a lab project thumbsup.gif
