BANGKOK: -- A senior army officer and an university lecturer lodged a complaint with the Crime Suppression Division police on Thursday claiming that they are now facing a bankruptcy lawsuit for acting as guarantors of another lecturer who has dishonoured her scholarship contract.

Maj-Gen Kittipob Manoonnimit, deputy chief of the civic affairs department, said he and his two friends, Mrs Chanchira Visetnath, a lecturer at Thonburi vocational college, and Pakit Srisakul, a lecturer at Rajabhat Suansunantha University, who didn’t show up decided to take their case to the police attention because they have been affected by the dishonesty of Mrs Pattharaporn Buathong, a former lecturer at Rajabhat Suansunantha University, who took a scholarship for study for a PhD in the United States and later defaulted on the scholarship contract.

After the graduation, Mrs Pattharaporn returned briefly for a month in February 2003 and left for the US and, afterward, she resigned from the university with the permission of the university administration, said Maj-Gen Kittipob.

He admitted he didn’t know whether the university had demanded repayments of the scholarship fund from Mrs Pattharaporn or not and had never been notified by the university until 2004 the three guarantors, including himself, were sued by the university.

However, Mrs Pattharaporn agreed to repay the university and about six million baht were said to have returned to the university.

However 2014, the army officer found the three of them facing a bankruptcy lawsuit from the university demanding payment for the rest of the fund, amounting to four million baht. To settle the case, they agreed to pay back the university 1.3 million baht each.

The officer said that Mrs Pattharaporn still managed to return home from the US and he would like the immigration bureau to blacklist her for betraying them.

on the average perhaps yes. regarding the mahidol-harvard dentist; mahidol reported she was the only default out of 5,000 such scholarships. that is a very very low default rate. US student loan default rates around 15% as frame of reference.

Yes, that's how it works when you guarantee loan payments by a borrower without sufficient net worth to cover borrower default.

The three guarantors were fortunate that they didn't have to pay back 100% of the loan. Mrs Pattharaporn fulfilled her university obligation by having 100% of the loan covered, albeit the university must partly collect from the guarantors. That's contract law.

The three gaurantors put their faith in Mrs Pattharaporn to pay 100% of the loan but she failed that faith. While that was personally disappointing, it is not criminal. Mrs Pattharaporn might even have grounds to sue the guarantors for defamation as a result of their criminal complaint.
