Princess Sirindhorn visits goat farm in Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI: Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn yesterday visited a royal goat farming project in Chiang Rai to follow up its progress.

She was on a visit to the northern province of Chiang Rai from February 9-12, according to the National News Bureau of Thailand (NNT).

NNT reported that on her second-day visit to the province, Her Royal Highness went to the Doi Tung Royal Development Project area in Mae Fa Luang District to observe the progress of the Black Bengal goat rearing project aimed at creating a source of income for poor villagers in the district.

The goat farming here was started in 2010 when Her Royal Highness graciously granted three Black Bengal goats that the People’s Republic of Bangladesh had presented to her for breeding and distribution to farmers.

Her Royal Highness then instructed the Mae Fa Luang Foundation and the Chai Pattana Foundation to bring the project to its goal.

The goats, one male and two female, were then raised by the Livestock Department at the Doi Tung Royal Development Project area.

The Black Bengal goat breed has outstanding characteristics in that it produces many goats in short time.

Female goats become pregnant twice a year and give birth to 2-4 baby goats each time.

Despite its small size with a height of 40-60 centimeters, the goat’s milk, skin and meat are in great demand.

The goat milk prevents tuberculosis and asthma. Raising Black Bengal goat is considered perfect as an additional source of income for farmers.

Maybe the project should be in Isaan...

The article didn't say how the goat farm was doing. It's been 6 years, how many goats do they have now and are they making a profit? Or did the farm eat the 3 goats? coffee1.gif

Apart from Muslims people, goats and goats products are frown upon here in this country

citing the gamey taste and the small of it's meat, while milk and cheese are too

expensive for the average pockets....

There always used to be a flock of goats and a few sheep down by the airport where they were occasionally a menace on the road.

Not seen them for a while though.

I've seen them in the mountains between Fang and Mae Suai as well.

Oh they're still around, often mill around at the road junction on the new by pass where the road from Wiang Chai in to King Mengrais statue crosses it.

You always know when there is a royal visiting, the RTAF C130 arrives the day before bringing in the royal limo.

I treat myself to a couple of lamb chops from Tops occasionally, a little expensive but they're 500B a kilo in Australia now as well.

Lamb chops, mint sauce, roast potatoes.... mm!
