CDC: new senate election system allows for more public participation

BANGKOK, 15 February 2016 (NNT) – The Constitution Drafting Commission has given an assurance that the new senate election system will allow for more public participation than ever before.

CDC member Prapan Naikovit said yesterday that the charter drafters have suggested a new election for members of the Upper House, which is intended to encourage eligible voters to participate more in the poll.

Mr. Prapan added that, under the new provisions for a Senate election, collusion will be very difficult and those found guilty of attempting it will be banned from politics and their voting rights will be revoked for the rest of their lives.

He stated that the Election Commission will be in charge of screening the qualifications of all candidates and will do so thoroughly to prevent collusion.

allow for more public participation than ever before.

Blantanly false.

The 2007 Constitution provided that 50% of the Senate be elected by the public. The current draft provides for ZERO per cent to be elected by the public.
