BANGKOK: -- Many commercials of food supplements and health products which were broadcast on digital and satellite TVs in the past six months were found to have contents deemed illegal.

Mr Patchara Klaewkla, coordinator of the network for the protection of consumers from TV broadcasts, told the media today (Monday) that the network had checked the commercials of food supplements and health products broadcasted in 22 digital TV channels in the past six months.

It was discovered that 25 commercials – 12 for food supplements and health food, 11 cosmetic products and two other products – carried contents deemed illegal.

Mr Patchara said the network would ask the Food and Drugs Administration to prepare a database for commercials of foodstuffs so that the public can access into for information.

He added that the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission would also be urged to promote self-regulation among digital and satellite TV operators.

So they are advertising products which are illegal to sell, or illegal to show on TV?

One would think they would go after the sellers of the product, not the television stations.

What has the illegal content, the advertisements or the advertised products?

illegal as in ingredients used to make the products exceed the legal limit or are simly not allowed, such as chemicals and what not. Not only that many of the supplements and health products are home made and would not pass any health standards.

And sometimes when buying the "extra-large" bag of chips in seems all you are really paying for is more air in a larger bag. And its polluted air from inside a food manufacturing factory.

I would have thought that many of the products sold on TV are "illegal" especially as they site they are good for the health, and body. Nobody questions the amount of sugar in these products and the damage they can do. They are actually disgraceful and the authorities should clamp down on these false claims.

They're doing you a favor. The air is the healthiest part of the whole thing!

How about whiting cream? But I guess its really healthy, turning a dirty brown body into a white goddess !

Not so. "Slack fill' as the manufacturers call it is actually nitrogen gas pumped into the bag before sealing. Two purposes, to protect the bag from crushing whilst being handled, and nitrogen keeps the product fresh. True, some good examples highlighted by a Thai friend who is a doctor of medicine and a nutrition lecturer:

- Boxes of milk with outrageous claims about higher IQ etc.

- Tubs of yogurt with big size fonts about low-fat / zero fat, in reality are loaded with outrageous amounts of sugar, but the sugar content conveniently written in very small size printing and most people wouldn't notice it.

...really not clear....

...the commercials are illegal....

...or the products due to the ingredients they contain.....
