BANGKOK, 20 February 2016 (NNT) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has emphasized on the government’s scheme to push forward digital economy development to benefit the nation and reduce social disparity.

In a national TV broadcast program, the premier said the government’s economic steering strategy is primarily designed as top priority to improve the people’s quality of life through balanced development in all areas along with better and equal access to government services.

He said the government is pushing forward the digital economy development which shall yield benefits to the country, including a broadband internet project to serve all 79,000 villages nationwide and to support trade, education, remote education via satellite and provide access to knowledge and information to the general public.

The development of internet infrastructure will be carried out in line with the government’s intention to position Thailand as Digital Hub of ASEAN, enhancing its strength in digital economy.

The premier further elaborated that the improved access to government services will help ease social disparity, given an example of public health services where the use of social media is required to improve medical care for patients in remote areas.

I have no problem with expanding broadband access. I just wish they would stop spouting nonsense about "the digital hub of ASEAN". This is ridiculous overreach.

Be careful folks, This is the GATEWAY that must not be named in disguise ph34r.pngph34r.png

does anyone here believe that this is partly due to an ulterior motive to move towards a cashless society?i.e. with more and more countries wanting to introduce negative interest rates .so they will want to force people to keep their money in the bank

It was not so long ago that a certain government put so many tablets into schools, and most of them failed and were of an inferior quality, are we now going to see more Chinese influence and money getting the ' HUB" in place?

Thought Singapore was the digital hub of Asia? Maybe the Thais dont realise someone else has beaten them to it?

What will the digital economy mean for my savings passbook?

"He said the government is pushing forward the digital economy development which shall yield benefits to the country,"

But the government is blocking more and more internet sites that they don't like and introducing snooper surveillance on the whole nation.

reduce social disparity

Since when is freedom of speech a social disparity? wai2.gif

No offense intended, but it's like asking if anyone thinks that dogs maybe genuinely understand our complex human motivations.

I think it's safe to assume that the good leader, like most people here, is most interested in looking good and sounding good. Nothing more complex than that.

Thailand has so very many problems to overcome if the goal is to be a successful 'digital hub'.

Ever notice things like -

that there is VERY little Thai language content on the web

if a multinational website has sub sites in many countries, it is virtually guaranteed that the Thai site, if working at all, will be among the very worst and least usable

Thailand is one of a small number of countries along with Iran, Chek Republic, Indonesia, that serves as a hot bed for Internet based scams and crime syndicates

IT talent in Thailand is almost unheard of

Thailand has a very long road ahead, and for the general or anyone here to make the constant predictions is laughable in light of where the country is educationally and socially.

THIS ^^

Also, to add, what will it mean for the hundreds of redundant copies of paper we manually sign (exactly the same way on each page) and hand in to immigration and other government agencies?

Just got new one for Thailand The HUB of creating HUB's

A digital Gateway That will NEVER happen here with the policies they have

Thailand has a way to go to catch up with neighboring nations before pretending their single gateway makes them a hub. Perhaps, hub is Thai for bottleneck.

Meanwhile in his spare time someone is composing a new hit for 24/7 broadcast:

"Single gate, single gate, single all the time..."

no offence taken .

it depends on whether you believe or don't believe regarding some bigger picture matters Thailand is following the lead or guidance or request from higher global authorities?

they are already introducing a cashless society in Zimbabwe and many other parts of Africa where they expect all notes to become obsolete within a year . if they can do it in Africa they can certainly do it in Southeast Asia. They're also doing it in India in partnership with the United Nations and other bodies including the Clinton foundation and Bill Gates (what is wrong with that picture)ph34r.png

But it sounds terrific. PM is good in finding big hubs everywhere....we will miss him one day.....

79000 villages to get free iPhones too I hope. Broadband in rural areas where most can't afford to use it.

And what about tablets again, for all school children. Sorry that's a populist scheme. Cannot do. Cannot do.

Perhaps the plural noun should be Hubbies?

Thailand the Land of Hubbies - I like that.

P.S, I have been drinking.
