Embassy Rescues Maid from Saudi Arabia

Khmer Times / Srey Kumneth

The Cambodian Embassy in Kuwait successfully rescued a Cambodian woman working as a maid in Saudi Arabia who complained of abusive working conditions, lack of food and of having pay withheld. Him Srey, a Cham Muslim from Kampong Cham province who went to Saudi Arabia last month to work, arrived in Bangkok on Saturday after consular officials, human rights organization Adhoc and a recruitment company intervened earlier this month.

According to Chhum Sounry, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the recruitment company was helping Ms. Srey return from Bangkok. In the meantime, the Cambodian Embassy has provided her accommodation.

Chorn Sokunthear, who heads the Women and Children’s Unit at Adhoc, told Khmer Times that there has not been a case of a migrant worker requiring rescue from Saudi Arabia in the last four to five years. Most recent cases, she said, involved workers in countries nearby who were deceived by brokers.
