Phatthalung holds festival showcasing Srivijaya culture to ASEAN Community

PHATTHALUNG, 23 February 2016, (NNT) - Phatthalung held a festival to celebrate Makha Bucha Day and introduce the Srivijaya culture to the ASEAN Community.

The event was held from February 20 - 22 at Wat Khien Bang Kaeo temple in Khao Chaison district, with the goal of preserving local religious rites and promoting tourism in the province.

A large number of tourists participated in the festival's activities, which included a rice porridge-cooking contest, an art exhibition, and a multimedia show about the ancient Srivijaya civilization.

Another attraction is the sacred cloth-wrapping ceremony of the pagoda in Wat Khien Bang Kaeo. The sacred cloth was paraded through nearby streets before being wrapped around the pagoda.

The ceremony continues long-standing traditions of the province, which can be traced back to old local folklore. This ceremony is only observed in select temples in three southern provinces, namely Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani, and Phatthalung.

I live in Phatthalung, about 25kms from Khao Chaison, and we've heard nothing about this. Obviously it's been advertised in all other ASEAN countries but not locally. Maybe that's why the super highway is nose to tail with foreign cars going to see the porridge cook off.facepalm.gif
