Deputy Defense Minister urges Thais to study draft charter thoroughly

BANGKOK, 23 February 2016 (NNT) - Deputy Defense Minister Gen Udomdej Sitabutr has urged everyone to thoroughly study the draft constitution and submit their opinions to the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC).

Gen Udomdej said the government is dedicated to steering the country through this transitional period. He said that its roadmap has been implemented continuously and a new constitution is being drafted to benefit the public and the nation as a whole.

The Deputy Defense Minister further stated that those wishing to voice their views on the draft charter can do so directly with the CDC.

In response to a comment by former chairman for the Constitution Drafting Committee Borwornsak Uwanno, Gen Udomdej said that it was his right to express his personal opinion. He urged Thais to cooperate with the government and understand that this administration is doing every it can to restore the country.

Exactly Hawk, how disingenuous is it of the Junta to put to referendum something that 95% of the population has no hope of understanding or interest in trying to as they all think it will be a done deal anyway???

Presumably so that they can then say, well "the people" supported it...

Has anyone on this site read the draft?

Since the draft has not been finalized nor approved by the NRSA, I doubt there is any public copy available.

I assume Gen. Udomej means that when the darft is available to the public, everyone should study it thoroughly...but Deputy PM Tanask says without protesting any of its provisions.

Well, if my GF, family and people living around the area are anything to go by...they are not even interested. I've offered to download and print it but all I got was ' Mai aow'. Probably waiting for the local headsman to read and explain...if he understands it, that is.

They would need to publish in comic book form for the average Thai,

to take any interest and understand.

I see there's a UK referendum on 23rd June concerning membership of the EU. A momentous decision will be taken by UK citizens voting on that day. Have I missed something, but BBC News hasn't shown a single clip of a UK Army General giving 'advice' to the population on the merits of staying in/opting out of the EU. Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I saw a soldier anywhere except on active duty, and that was only when I was watching BBC TV. I wonder whether anyone in Thailand knows what is supposed to happen in a relatively democratic democracy when they are asking the populace to vote on their new constitution?

I am reminded of when Arthur Dent discovers his house is about to be knocked down:-

MISTER PROSSER:

But Mister Dent the plans have been available in the planning office for the last nine months!
ARTHUR DENT:
Yes! I went round to find them yesterday afternoon. You’d hadn’t exactly gone out of your way to pull much attention to them have you? I mean, like actually telling anybody or anything.
MISTER PROSSER:
The plans were on display.
ARTHUR DENT:
Ah! And how many members of the public are in the habit of casually dropping around the local planning office of an evening?
MISTER PROSSER:
Er - ah!
ARTHUR DENT:
It’s not exactly a noted social venue is it? And even if you had popped in on the off chance that some raving bureaucrat wanted to knock your house down, the plans weren’t immediately obvious to the eye were they?
MISTER PROSSER:
That depends where you were looking.
ARTHUR DENT:
I eventually had to go down to the cellar!
MISTER PROSSER:
That’s the display department.
ARTHUR DENT:
With a torch!
MISTER PROSSER:
The lights, had… probably gone.
ARTHUR DENT:
So had the stairs!
MISTER PROSSER:
Well you found the notice didn’t you?
ARTHUR DENT:
Yes. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet, stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying “Beware of the Leopard”. Ever thought of going into advertising?
